In 1950, McCabe began to play for the Caterpillar basketball team in Peoria. He would play for a total of threes years as one of the dominant players of the Caterpillar AAU team.
Accolades
- Was a member of the 1952 United States Olympic Basketball Team that defeated the Russian team to win the gold medal in Helsinki, Finland. He played in 7 of the 8 matches.
- Played with Bob Kurland (Basketball HOF, '61) and Clyde Lovellette (Basketball HOF, '88) on the Olympic team.
- Elected to the Greater Peoria Sports Hall of Fame in 1982. It was the Hall of Fame's second class of inductees.
