Ruehl spent two years at Milwaukee Normal, before transferring to Marquette. He played one full season for the Hilltoppers, before school authorities declared him ineligible for varsity competition on the basketball team, prior to the late-January trip to play at Michigan State. Marquette was 6-5 at that point, but went on a six-game slide after Ruehl left the squad and finished 11-12.
