===== Golden Eagles Join Sweet 16 With Upset Win =====

[[Buzz Williams]] can remember every excruciating detail of each of those plays - plays that ended the Marquette Golden Eagles' three previous trips to the [[NCAA Tournament]] in the some of the most excruciating ways possible.

On Sunday night at Quicken Loans Arena, though, the third-year coach was finally able to experience what the other side felt like.

With a huge three-pointer from the right wing by [[Darius Johnson-Odom]] serving as the dagger, 11th-seeded MU put a dent in brackets from one coast to the other by upsetting the third-seeded [[Syracuse]] Orange, 66-62, in the second memorable battle in less than two months between the [[Big East]] rivals.

"I don't know that we would still be playing if it wasn't for those experiences," Williams said in the bowels of the arena, roughly an hour after the game. "I think those experiences  . . . suffering results in thanksgiving, as long as you handle suffering in the appropriate manner.

"All of us - not just me, every assistant that's on our staff, all of the players that have been a part of that trek - have had to endure those life-changing losses. This was a life-changing win. But I don't know that you get to this win without those losses."

The coldblooded Johnson-Odom scored 17 points, [[Jae Crowder]] added 16 points and seven rebounds in addition to some stellar interior defense, and [[Jimmy Butler]] 10 points, five rebounds, three assists and three steals for the Golden Eagles (22-14), who overcame 55.3% shooting by [[Syracuse]] (27-8) by sinking 19 of 23 free throws compared to the Orange's 5 of 7.

The script was much the same in the teams' first meeting, which was won by MU, 76-70, on Jan. 29 at the Bradley Center.

But this win had infinitely more meaning.

The Golden Eagles advanced to their first Sweet 16 since 2003, when Marquette made it to the Final Four, and will face the second-seeded [[North Carolina]] Tar Heels (28-7) at 6:15 p.m. CDT Friday at the Prudential Center in Newark, N.J.

The top-seeded [[Ohio State]] Buckeyes and fourth-seeded [[Kentucky]] Wildcats, two more of college basketball's blue-blood programs, round out the East Regional.

"I know I can speak for myself and all my teammates when I say that this is an incredible feeling," Butler said. "Nobody ever could have thought we'd be here with teams like that. But each and every day we work so hard to prepare for this type of situation. And now that we're here and we've reached it, we don't want to stop now."

MU didn't appear to be headed anywhere but home early on, as it trailed by as many as 10 because of turnovers and an inability to penetrate the 2-3 zone of Syracuse.

Slowly but surely, though, the Golden Eagles clawed back and, with a combination of tough defense of their own, balanced scoring and a continued emphasis on driving the lane, regained the lead at 47-46 with 10 minutes 47 seconds left.

But that was just the start of the seesaw, with the teams exchanging the advantage five times over the next 7:01. Syracuse took a 59-56 lead with 2:53 left, but the Golden Eagles tied it back up on their next possession on a Crowder three.

The teams then exchanged turnovers, setting the stage for Johnson-Odom's three.

With the shot clock winding down, Butler drove the lane but found his path blocked. It was then he spotted Johnson-Odom camped out behind him on the right wing. He flung it to the junior guard, who buried it with 25.1 seconds left.

"I know it came down to the end of the shot clock," Johnson-Odom said. "And Jimmy made a hard dribble to the left, and I happened to be spotting up right behind him. He just found the open man, what we do every day, and luckily I knocked the shot down."

Two free throws apiece by [[Junior Cadougan]] and Crowder gave MU a five-point lead with 10.1 seconds left. And after a steal by [[Dwight Buycks]] ended it, the celebration was on.

The highlight of that was Williams, who made a beeline across the court and into the rows of media tables lining it, fists pumping the entire way. Eventually he made his way back to his wife, Corey, and shared a tearful embrace with her and their children before heading back to the locker room.

"I guess it was sinking in that God could be that big, that He would allow something like that to happen," he said of the moment. "It's just as much about my wife and children and those who were in attendance to support us as it is me. It just so happens that I get to be the spokesperson for those people more often than not. I was overcome with emotion, and I still am."
