===== High School Career =====
Bruce was a three-year starter for Jeff Thielke at Whitefish Bay High School, where he had a career scoring average of 15.2 points per game.  As a senior, Bruce averaged 20.3 points per game, second in the North Shore Conference to [[Tony Smith]], who averaged 21.1 points per game.  Hayes also averaged five rebounds and four assists per game as a senior.

=== Nebraska-Omaha ===
Hayes earned a full scholarship to the University of Nebraska-Omaha following his senior year at Whitefish Bay.  He played 25 games for the Mavericks during the 1986-87 season, hitting on 17 of 43 shots (.335) and was 6 of 11 (.545) on threes.  He was also six of eight from the foul line, for 75%.  Hayes averaged 1.8 points, 1.2 rebound and 1.9 assists and close to 13 minutes per game for Coach Bob Hanson.  His career highs were eight points, three rebounds and four assists.

Hayes transferred to Marquette in 1987 and attended MU for two years before joining the Warriors as a walk-on in September of 1989.

=== 1989-90 ===
Hayes averaged 14 minutes per game off the bench, earning the team "Super Sub" award for 1989-90.  He ranked third on the team with 16 three-point field goals and only committed 20 turnovers in 25 games.  His 41% three-point field goal percentage ranked second on the team behind [[Tony Smith]]'s team-leading 41.4% mark.  He finished fourth on the team with 32 assists and had a game-high of four against [[Detroit]].  He also grabbed four rebounds twice, against [[Chicago State]] and at [[Xavier]].  Hayes scored 11 points, knocking down three three-pointers against the defending NCAA champion [[Michigan]] Wolverines at the Bradley Center.  He scored a career-high 12 points at [[DePaul]], hitting four three-pointers against the Blue Demons.\\

After playing significant minutes as a walk-on in 1989-90, Hayes was awarded a scholarship by head coach Kevin O’Neill prior to the season.  He played in 28 games that season, averaging 12.7 minutes per game and was sixth on the team in steals.

===== Personal =====
Bruce's nickname was "Bomb" and his favorite NBA players were Michael Jordan and Magic Johnson.  His favorite NBA team was the Lakers and his ideal place to vacation was the Florida Keys.  He enjoys tacos and brats and his hobbies include weightlifting and biking.  Hayes had an intense rivalry in high school with [[Tony Smith]] and cites that as his top high school highlight.  His parents are Rayford and Claudine Hayes and he was an Engineering major.
