One simple measure is NCAA tournament performance. The ranking below assigns teams: 1 point for each bid earned; 2 points for making the Sweet 16; 4 points for an Elite 8 appearance; 8 points for reaching the Final Four; 16 points for playing in the title game; and 32 points for winning it all. This list counts vacated wins.

So, for instance, this year Florida earned 63 points (1+2+4+8+16+32). This weighting obviously heavily favors advancing deep into the tournament.

According to my math (feel free to check it), here's how it shakes out for the past 25 tournaments (2000–2025):

1. UConn - 355 pts
2. UNC - 317
3. Duke - 292
4. Florida - 273
4. Kansas - 273
6. Michigan St. - 213
7. Kentucky - 180
7. Villanova - 180

Kind of a silly list imo. Winning it once in 2003, and just coasting and losing in the 1st round would put them ahead of a team who made the elite 8, 8 times.

My minor gripe with the methodology is it equates a bubble team like us in 2018 to a team that went almost winless like DePaul. I think if you bump up the point tally of making the tournament to 6, win nit 5, 4, 3, 2, 1, that'd help show a not terrible season (2018) vs a truly abysmal one (Wojo's first or last year) and it'd help show what programs have had some drops off but maintained a level of consistency.

My other qualm would be to give points for regular season conference championships from single bid leagues. It'd help showcase who the real mid major powers are not just who gets hot over the weekend.

It follows bracket challenge scoring pretty close lol. Not a good measurement for overall team strength over years.

Sorry to nitpick but 5 former Big East teams: L'ville, Syracuse, West Virginia, Pitt and Notre Dame.
