Quote from: Galway Eagle on April 03, 2025, 08:39:44 AMI think the cause and effect changes. He left because his mother died and wanted to get away vs he stayed because he wanted to be around his mom while she was sick.

Same outcome different motive. The former someone (I believe Ners) still pouts that we lost him, the latter shows he wasn't really ours to lose in the first place and we were lucky to get him at all.

Yes, correct on the last sentence.

mid-90s walk-on Mark Harris (RIP) is one I remember watching in the Rec Center during the off season who could really get up. Easily over 40 inches.

Zach McCall was reportedly around a 42 inch vertical. I was playing pick-up with him at the Rec Center and he had a huge putback jam over Big Dog Robinson and his feet were at my eye level.

Keeyan Iterje holds the program record of a standing vertical leap at 36.5 inches.

As far as lowest, I am going Matt Heldt for a guess.

Quote from: MuggsyB on April 03, 2025, 05:44:24 AMI guess you're right about the combime.  Thompson had ridiculous college stats.  There were some fun players back in the day.

Pretty sure it's an urban legend, but ...

Supposedly Thompson and Julius were trying to see who could jump the highest and who had the most hang-time. A quarter was placed on the top of the backboard; Thompson jumped, and flipped the quarter from heads to tails before he descended, living up to his Skywalker nickname. Not to be deterred, Dr. J had two quarters placed on top of the backboard, jumped, and turned over both quarters.

I have seen no evidence of this actually happening, but I love the story and I hope it's true.

I think I was on the court with you at the same time as that Zach McCall dunk.  Used to play with Mark "IELEV8" Harris a lot as well.  Both of those guys need to be on the list.

Davante.  I am not sure I ever saw both of his feet off the floor at the same time.  His jumper was in actuality a rocker, from his heels to his toes when he took the shot.
Have some patience, FFS.

John Polonowski won it that year. I think he just threw it off the backboard.

Has to be Artie Green, hands down.  I remember seeing several of his dunks where he had to move his head out of the way so he didn't conk it on the rim.  And he was only 6'1", so that translates to at least 48" of vertical.

This "Grasshopper" story about his rise and fall is fascinating:

Let me just say this:  I watched Davante in a summer league game get pissed off at Vander because he wasn't passing him the ball.  He proceeded to usurp a defensive rebound, quickly jet up the floor while cross-overing some poor sap , and took the rock all the way for a thunderous 2 handed flush.  There weren't a lot of people in attendance(it was at that hs in Glendale), but there was a collective disbelief in the athleticism and hops he showed during that sequence.  Now, I'm not saying he was Vince Carter, but remember Davante was only 6'7.  As a side note he was also inordinately kind to my nephs who were 5 and 7 at the time.
