Right - And from the Boise State article:
Quoteall expenses for teams are paid and the players receive NIL money should they reach the semifinals and finals.

Each team in the semifinals receives $50,000 in NIL money to disperse amongst the players. That number goes up to $100,000 if you reach the finals and $300,000 if you win the tournament.

I wouldn't doubt the Boise state decision was 1) a FU to the NCAA, and 2) A feeling the players could make some $.
