The amount of rain that Tropical Storm Helene unleashed over North Carolina was so intense, no amount of preparation could have entirely prevented the destruction that ensued.

But decisions made by state officials in the years leading up to Helene most likely made some of that damage worse, according to experts in building standards and disaster resilience.

Over the past 15 years, North Carolina lawmakers have rejected limits on construction on steep slopes, which might have reduced the number of homes lost to landslides; blocked a rule requiring homes to be elevated above the height of an expected flood; weakened protections for wetlands, increasing the risk of dangerous storm water runoff; and slowed the adoption of updated building codes, making it harder for the state to qualify for federal climate-resilience grants.

Unfortunately, it takes a disaster before many things ever change.

I wish that the disasters would at least lead to changes, but they often do not. The wildfires on the hillsides of California have not, to my knowledge, stopped people from building (or rebuilding) on the slopes. Beachfront homes are washed away, and replacements built in their place. I am not suggesting a total ban but rather some restrictions regarding terrain, setback from the high tide line, etc. In California, I believe that the fires are almost all conifer fires, trees loaded with highly volatile, nearly explosive resin.

I've taken an Uber from Tampa to Orlando once, they're quite close.

Much closer than people realize.  Its basically north side of Chicago to Milwaukee.  We have a number of friends down here who do day trips to Disney with their kids.  And not even a long stressful day. 

Wake up, have breakfast, get in the car around 8-830, get there within an hour of park opening.  Even if they stay till weekday park close at 6, they're home in time for a slightly late dinner.

Ive not needed to, cause I would be connecting regardless, but driving St Pete to MCO for a flight is a bit shorter than when I used to drive the from the MKE burbs to ORD for international flights.

You're gonna be that dude?  Magic Kingdom is 15 miles from MCO.  Less than 20 from downtown Orlando.  For the purposes of this discussion, its close enough unless you want to go "WELL AKSHULLY". 

Literally nothing about my statement, either relative airport distance related to Chicago/MKE or easy day trip to Disney, would change if Magic Kingdom was in the dead center of Downtown Orlando.  You act like its 50 miles and an hour away.

Its become oddly popular.  I remember a social media rabbit hole when I moved down here of people from all over the East Coast (DC area and North) who had season passes and regularly do day trips. 

One person I saw did it with a connection which makes me question their mental sanity.
