Shouldn't this really be judged by % capacity?

I mean it's cool to see us 8th but if you run a 10k arena and average 10k fans that seems like a bigger deal than averaging say 8 or 9k for crappy games then skewing it with 6 18k sell outs each year.

I don't know what you mean by "judged." It's just a stat that Marquette uses for its benefit.

No, it should be judged by average number of fans in attendance.  The schools with the arenas that can only hold 10k fans should get bigger arenas.

I suppose there's an entirely different statistic that is average % capacity filled, which may not rank MU 8th, but this stat does rank MU 8th. The different stats convey different pieces of information. I don't think one is inherently better than the other.

If MU had spent million$ to build an on-campus arena, MU would not be ranked 8th in total attendance.   If more games were played at the Al, MU would not be ranked 8th in attendance.   For a private school with an overall enrollment of 11k to be competitive with the UNC's, Syracuse's,  Arizona's, Sparty's of the world is something to take pride in.

Which is exactly why Marquette pushes it.

Yep. I would guess that schools with arenas that can hold a max of 10k fans know that they would not have the increased attendance to fill a larger arena. And then there are schools like DePaul and Georgetown  :) , but that's another subject.

MU's 2023-24 average per home game attendance of 16,307 is an all-time high.

Fiserv has a capacity of 17,385.   So, % is solid.

Granted I'm using last years data but

UD arena: capacity 13,407

Dayton attendance average: 13,407

Do you really think they're sitting there thinking "phew, glad we built the fact perfect size arena for the demand we generate" not "wow we could've gone another 2k up"?

Duke, Cameron indoor 9,314 their attendance average 9,314

Xavier cintas center actually hold 10,224 but they average slightly more at 10,286

Purdue's like Xavier average more than capacity at 14,876 when capacity is 14,804

I'm sure I could go through more arenas/teams to make my point but if you're averaging a sell out (or more) it seems like enough evidence to refute the idea that there's no greater demand for tickets than those that are in the stadium. It'd be an unreal business if they were meeting 100% demand perfectly and that demand stayed static year in year out.

Marquette 8th in the Nation in Attendance

Last season was the first since the early-90s that I contributed to that figure. I'm considering doing so again this season.

Those schools could fill a larger arena, but we don’t know just how big.

MU’s 16,307 average surpasses the capacity of those arenas.  Some of those other programs would surpass that, some of them would not.

It’s tough for a college program to fill an NBA arena because for a city to have an NBA arena automatically means that the college team is not the main hoops team in town—what else does one do in West Lafayette?  MU nation does an admirable job.

100% capacity in a 10,000-seat arena is nice. However, that does not mean the same school would have 100% capacity in a 15,000-seat arena.
