What comes next, MU president and AD

It is a fair question to ask.  Let us ask it here and leave the Dr. Lovell thread for odes and kind words.

MU is now in the market for an AD and a president.   Again.   Please, don't let the Lakers make a run at Shaka if Hurley says no.

Are there any qualified Jesuits out there?
Will MU make an AD pick without a president in place?

And finally, which scooper should get the nod?   ;)

For either position, my answer is the same:

What's Larry up to?

Tyler COLEk

Seems like Shaka assuming all three roles and fulfilling his destiny to become MU's Triumvirate Unum is an easy call for all parties.

cheebs09

I think the Lakers are going to hire Reddick. I doubt Shaka is even in their radar.

I could see asking Scholl to stay on a year, maybe get his wisdom on potential people in terms of the athletic program. Plus shouldn't a new prez have a say in a new AD. But pure speculation on my part.
What does all this do to Shaka's happy place? The mutual feeling between him and Lovell was very clear.

My guess is an interim President for the next year. Suspend the AD search and ask Scholl to stay on. Run both searches simultaneously in the Spring.

Wouldn't it make sense that Marquette has been prepared for this and the President search may not be as complicated/long as some suspect?

Yes and no.   You would hope the BOT had quietly put together a list, with the cancer as the reason.   On the other hand, with Lovell still working, literally to the very end, it would be difficult to do more than have a list known only to a few.

Presidential searches are more of a community-based process - so I would guess there will be a representative search committee of some sort. And my guess is that the Trustees have no "list" whatsoever, unless it is some sort of internal plan. (Remember these are volunteers.) So there will be a search firm to help with the process.

The other thing an interim does is help with what will be a very somber year. A Jesuit with higher education experience, or possibly a former Trustee who knows the community, is semi-retired but still has the energy left to put a good year in could work. A Ulice Payne or a Jeff Joerres for instance.

Or it could be the Provost, who served as a Dean prior and might be best able to push forward initiatives already in place. But that just causes another vacancy.

Much depends on the direction the university seeks to go during the next few years. President Lovell has done a magnificent job on infrastructure so now the question is, "what does Marquette need most?" Some thoughts:

1) Retention of Shaka Smart
2)
3) Building the Marquette brand as being at the academic forefront in higher education.
4) Continued evolution and development of Marquette's Roman Catholic mission in an increasingly secular world.
5) Development of a reliable funding source for intercollegiate athletes to ensure Men's and Women's basketball remains at the forefront of the intercollegiate world.
6) Build the endowment.

Two is intentionally blank. Nothing comes close to Coach Shaka.

Amid all of this, I'd be asking our AD to stick around on an interim basis until a new president is found. And I'd let Coach Shaka know that the Society of Jesus will be bounced before he will! Here's hoping both are with us for a long, long time.

Disco Hippie

The current Jesuit president of Creighton is an MU Alum, but not on the BOT.   Not sure if that makes an appointment less likely but would think so since they wouldn't be up to speed on current matters.  Then again Dr. Lovell wasn't either so who knows.

Points 1 and 2 aren't a glowing indictment on higher education and I agree with you those are probably the top 2 priorities for a lot of people

To be clear, an "acting president" doesn't necessarily mean "interim president." He was named acting president immediately because the University needs a president for all sorts of legal and governance reasons.

He could remain in this role until an interim is selected, or a permanent president is installed.

Let Shaka pick the next Prez and AD....

Fully expecting President to come first. No AD decision was going to be made without President Lovell's approval, I can't imagine that would change. Wouldn't begin to speculate on names, but considering there was no hard and fast date for Scholl to leave, I imagine they will try to fill President Lovell's spot in relatively short order and once that's finalized move on with replacing Scholl so the new President and AD are on the same page.

I don't know what you mean by "relatively short order," but I think it would be close to impossible to hire anyone for the Presidency role before the start of the academic year.  And even if you ran a comprehensive search, the summer and the fall is traditionally not the time for those searches. CAN they do it? Sure. But I think it limits the quality of the candidates. These roles are usually run on academic year cycles.

That is why I think they will name an interim, run the Presidential search over the course of the fall and beginning of spring, and name a President while simultaneously running the AD search. You can have Scholl, Broeker, or someone from the outside come in and do the AD job for a year.

they shoulda made scholl the interim president and Broeker the permanent AD.

Eh. He'll be fine in an acting capacity. The main priority right now is continuity.
