Excellent article on video/analytics.

Who is that guy staring at an iPad on Marquette's bench during games? Meet Shaka Smart's director of video and analytics

QuoteSmart is too busy to look at clips during timeouts. Instead, he just gets a quick look at a traditional box score.
"I look at the plus-minus," Smart said. "It's just a snapshot, but just an indication of how we did when a guy was in the game. I look at assists, and then I look at certain things from the other team that we're trying to take away."

"Last game, (Creighton's Baylor) Scheierman was obviously killing us, you don't need numbers to tell you that he was hurting us," Mulry said. "But just in the halfcourt we were so good defensively in the first half and transition was the issue.
"Even if we're able to give a number, to point that out to our guys that, hey, in the halfcourt, we don't even need to tell them the number but you can see right on the page, hey, they're 0.86 points per possession in the halfcourt, we're doing great there. We just need to keep doing that, keep them out of transition, make them play against our set defense. If we can do that, we'll be in great shape in the second half."

Ben Steele with an article detailing the individual workouts assistant coach Mark Dixon does with Oso.

Inside the workouts that make Marquette's Oso Ighodaro one of the nation's most skilled big men

Assistant Coach Mark Dixon says "...so there's some times when you have to use the scoop." (And he wasn't talking about a pooper scooper.)

I knew someone was listening to all of us!

Not behind a pay wall.

Great article.  This is the first time I've witnessed the city embracing Marquette in this way.  As a visual example, the lighting of the bridge blue and gold after last year's Big East tourney championship.

I think it is really cool that Shaka has emphasized this and that the basketball program is driving deeper ties with Milwaukee.

Great article. I think it is awesome the impact that Shaka and the program has on the city of MKE. I love seeing our guys being part of the community and making a difference. Not breaking news, but Shaka is the real deal!!

A FL Gator sports podcast - In All Kinds of Weather - had one of their hosts, Neil Blackmon, say that he got a text from the beat writer of the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel who said that if MU plays FL that MU will lose by 15 points. I assume he was referring to Ben Steele? Came at the 30:30 mark on the podcast on 3/19/24.

'Precocious neophyte': New York Knicks legend Walt 'Clyde' Frazier likes rookie Tyler Kolek

Quote"Tyler is a real team player, a pass-first guard that I really like," Frazier told the Journal Sentinel. " And he has a great mentor in Jalen Brunson."
The 6-foot-1 guard − Frazier would call him "Lilliputian" − showed his passing savvy in the NBA summer league and in the preseason.

'We share a lot of laughs': Marquette's Kam Jones and team chaplain have unique friendship

QuoteLaurance's devotion to the team goes deeper than game days. He's at nearly every practice. "I've seen him at a guard workout in the summer," Jones said. "His dedication to Marquette and this team is nothing short of amazing. I love Father Laurance."

Here's what Marquette coach Shaka Smart said about his four-player 2025 recruiting class

Shaka's thoughts on expanding rosters to 15 next year:
QuoteThe NCAA will expand men's basketball roster scholarship limits from 13 to 15 next season. If MU retains all its players with eligibility, it will have 14 slots filled next season.

It might seem hard to keep that many players happy in regards to playing time.
"Does it make sense to have 15 guys on scholarship that all expect to play in the same year?" Smart said. "Probably not.
"But at the same time, and we saw this last season and dealt with it at the early part of this year, you would certainly rather have a couple too many guys than a couple not enough.

"It's not about the total number of guys, it's about how many guys you have that are ready to go in the game and impact the game at a high level when you are playing against the best of the best.
"I like redshirting guys that need some time, so that's been good with the guys that we have redshirted. I think they've grown as people. I think they've gotten significantly better as players. It's not a magic formula but it does allow you to have a lap around the sun."

That Shaka guy is kind of smart. Maybe we should keep him around.

In his first four college games, Marquette's Royce Parham has shown to be a perfect fit

Parham got a taste of the physicality he'll face against high-major opponents when he guarded Maryland's 6-9, 250-pound Julian Reese and 6-10, 246-pound Derik Queen. That's what he focuses on in practices against teammates Ben Gold and Caedin Hamilton.
"Obviously I'm a freshman, so I'm not the strongest," Parham said. "And playing against them in practice helps me get ready for bigs that are 7-foot, 260-something."

WRA didn't play Monteverde last season. Looks like WRA's four games in the tournament were Newman School (MA) in round one (84-76), Mt. Zion Prep (MD) in round two (78-58), New Hampton School (NH) in the semifinal (96-92), and Putnam Science Academy (CT) in the finals (76-63). Monteverde played in a different tournament. It looks like, for the most part, WRA plays in different circles than Monteverde (and the rest of the Nike EYBL).
