Since we're on a 5 game (and counting!) win streak, I remembered Wojo getting a bunch of guff for not having win streaks in conference play (rightfully so).

Let's take a look back at some past Big East win streaks.

Season: Max Conference win streak

Wojo
2021: 2
2020: 3
2019: 8 (then famously 4 game losing streak to finish the season)
2018: 2
2017: 2
2016: 2
2015: 1 (puke)

Buzz
2014: 3
2013: 4 (twice)
2012: 7 (and another 5 game streak)
2011: 3
2010: 5
2009: 9

Crean
2008: 5
2007: 8
2006: 3

Shaka at Texas in Big 12 play
2021: 4
2020: 5
2019: 2
2018: 1
2017: 1
2016: 3

4 or more game Big East win streak seasons have been good to MU in the past. We've never missed the tourney ('07, '08, '09, '10, '12, '13, '19) and have won a combined 7 tournament games during those seasons.

Buzz & Crean each did it in 66% of their Big East seasons. Wojo was 1/7 (14%). Shaka is now at 100%.

Let's hope it continues!

This is quite the tilt based on the thread.

He bascially just outlined how successful our seasons are if we get streaks of 4 or more.

But look at how the data was arranged. Comparing by coach not conference. If you wanted to actually present relevant data you would only look at about 1/4 of the data presented because data from the OBE and the B12 is useless. He organized it by coach, continuing the obsession with former coaches, and included data from when we were playing USF, Cincy and Rutgers. That is what I don't understand.

LOL wut

I was literally just trying to show what happened to us with Big East conference win streaks since it's been a topic here in the past and we're on a sweet one right now

Big 12 isnt' a good comp to the new Big East? the old Big East isn't a good comp to the new Big East?

I'm confused man, sorry if I offended, you seem a bit sensitive about something right now. Again, apologies.

I think conference win streaks are good. And they seem to be correlated with broadly successful seasons we've had in the past. Please enjoy it! I am!

You're looking in the past man, I'm looking forward. You can look at Creans 2007 streak all you want, I'm focused on how the current on gets extended.

Cool? I'm... also looking at that?

By saying "let's hope it continues" after a fairly in depth look at data from the last 15 years? I guess so.

I also think your conclusion is not all that insightful.  Teams that are good enough to go on a four game winning streak in a high major conference are almost exclusively teams that are good enough to receive an at large bid. That's not exactly earth shattering insight.

Sorry I offended by taking a look at our past conference win streaks! This argument is officially... DJOver

You just let me know when "longest winning streak" gets added to the NET calculations, team sheets, or the Selection Committee's criteria.  Until then, I will continue to ignore it when considering whether or not a team is deserving of a bid.

You seem to be doing a pretty effective job of not ignoring it. I don't think the OP was thinking it should be a metric for the Committee to consider.

It's interesting (to some of us) to see data on past MU winning streaks, if only wondering/hoping that the current one will exceed all the former ones.

Sure it didn't need to be divided by coaches, but that's nothing to get all worked up about.

Now up to 6, for the 5th time in our 17 year Big East tenure

The 4 other times we went

2007: one & done

Silkk the Shaka

7 in a row, now tied with 2012

2 seasons with 8, another with 9

Not sure the point here because the Old Big East is considered by most to be the superior conference when we also had to play ND, Louisville, Pitt, Syracuse, WV, and UConn (granted they have now comeback)

Exactly. All the OP is looking at is number of games won in a row, not who those games were against. A big part of the reason that the current streak is so impressive is that it includes 4 wins over ranked teams.

This is why purely looking at the longest winning streak a team accrues in a season and correlating that to any postseason success can be misleading. You also have to look at the scheduling, which is absent from the OP.

Edit: 4 ranked wins, not 5.

The relevant variable is the coach. Bad coaches correlate with bad stats and good coaches correlate with good stats. Imagine that.

He could've arranged it by uniform color if you'd prefer?
