I didn't, Lenny did.  Airline prices aren't down down because they added baggage fees, etc.  They're down because of a global pandemic.

My point is that you see BMW doing this now, and you don't think that the other car manufacturers will follow suit?  If it adds to the stock price and there is no measurable push back... and with subscription services there usually isn't because after a month or two people forget about them... then you better believe that others will do the same.

The other manufacturers won't follow suit unless it's a success for BMW. Or they may use the fact that they don't charge as a marketing tool, like Southwest does with bag fees.

Not to mention that it gives rich guys another way to humblebrag. "Can you believe that BMW is charging me extra for heated seats? *sigh* Guess I gotta pay it."

OnStar has been offered since 1996 with over 7 million users/subscribers and with over one million paying wifi subscribers. This is morphing into GM Connected Services with over 22 million vehicles. It's over a $2 billion business. You act like this is new for vehicles?

I heard no one would pay $1 to download a song to an iPod too when it's free on Napster.

I mean, Tesla does something similar with their dangerously named "autopilot" subscription.

When it starts getting cold out subscriptions will inevitably increase.   Personally, I think it is absolute dog crap to arbitrarily lock hardware functionality behind a paywall.

Hopefully, the invisible hand of the market takes care of this, but I have my doubts.

OnStar is a service.  There are people and logistics involved running the service.  Flipping a switch over the internet for hardware that exists in an automobile is a far different thing.

I never said it was new or surprising, in fact, I said it would only increase from here.

Bzzzt.  The correct answer is that all manufacturers will follow suit because then the consumer has no choice but to hand over more money.

I was making the same point that deactivating hardware that is already installed and then charging a monthly fee to reactivate it is fundamentally different than charging a monthly fee for a service. I'm not saying it's surprising, but it is different.

To Chick's point, I'll resist buying a car that requires a subscription to use pre-installed features it as long as there are other reasonable options. I soured on BMW years ago when shopping for my first "grown up" car because I felt that their pricing model "nickeled and dimed" me too much. Amazingly, they somehow survived without me as a customer. I suspect they will again.

My god that video is....something.  The Hitler stache was a nice touch.

Honestly, of all the absolutely absurd things he said in it...the most absurd was how bad that Freeway Bobblehead was.

We have the Milverine bobble. I think it's the only one my wife owns.
