Shaka was on Jon Rothstein's pod and Jon asked Shaka about the portal and if he would ever take a transfer if there was a need...

Shaka said that there was a case last Spring where one of his favorite players he ever recruited hit the transfer portal. He chose to go somewhere else out of HS and Shaka said he was in tears, but when he entered the portal it didn't make sense to re-recruit him over guys that are already in the program and on the way to the program.

Any guesses on who that might be? He didn't name the player.

I would guess Leon Bond.

Maybe Seth Trimble, but I don't think we were as involved there as we were with Bond where we were clearly involved until the end.

Ohhh I forgot about Leon Bond. I think you may be right there.

The only two with connections that I could think of were Trimble and then Jonas Aidoo who decomitted when Shaka took over. Leon Bond definitely makes the most sense.

Juan Anderson's Mixtape

Leon Bond is a good guess.

Interesting how recruiting works out. Leon Bond was ranked much higher than Chase Ross, but Ross has had a much better career.

We all know what Chase has done. Meanwhile, Leon Bond had a redshirt year, then played 12 mpg at Virginia, and transferred to Northern Iowa.

Bond has turned into a solid starter at the MVC level, but Chase is much better, starting for top 10 team and BE contender.

Shaka developed Chase.....that is the difference.

Yes, Shaka has done a nice job developing Chase but Chase still entered college at a higher level than Leon Bond.

Chase played 17 mpg as a frosh on a top 10 team. As I mentioned, Bond redshirted as a frosh. That's a big difference in where the two players started their college careers.

Yeah Tony Bennett isn't a slouch. To say the only difference is coaching is a little much.

Hopefully recruits see that Shaka and staff can identify physical talent in a player, and yes project out how much more these players can be developed and they develop them.   But what sets Shaka and crew apart is their ability to develop their mental talent that improves individual physical talent with the right mindset and team mindset.

Listen to the two Xavier players after the loss.   They were saying how disconnected they played, no communication, etc.    This talent of Shaka's is s real differentiator and one if the reasons his players do well and his team does well.

He didn't develop Bond the way they wanted. He left for lower competition. It happens to the best coaches.

Ellis had tough injury.
Itejere was a significant project.......neither similar to Bond situation......but point taken.

Probably Made Hoops own rankings since he works for them.

Ian Miletic with 7pts on 3/3 shooting in very limited minutes this morning for Rolling Meadows against woeful Timothy Christian at the Jack Tosh holiday classic.
Score was 48-11 at the half.
