Why choose MU over Alabama money?  Maybe that whole player development vs portal thing plays a role in situations like this?

Another example of how years of Georgetown ignoring the DC recruiting base have left Ed Cooley to build bridges which are no longer there.

He would be a fine pickup for Marquette.

It is crazy how DC has become a recruiting gold mine and Georgetown doesn't seem to be involved at all with any of them.

I feel like the exact same sentence has been written about Chicago and DePaul for decades.

The DC area (DC, nVa and MD burbs) has always been a hoops hot bed...the heyday of the ACC 1970's -'00 would stock-up on DC talent. DeMatha, Gonzaga, Springbrook, Archbishop Carrol, Paint Branch, Good Council and others ...always had/have D-1 talent. I lived in that area as a kid through jr yr of HS. It was pretty cool seeing coaches like Dean Smith, Jimmy V, Coach K, Lefty Driesell, Terry Holland in the stands. True old-school recruiting before AAU etc became a big deal. (btw, Lefty had a great overnight summer camp at Cole Field House. I'm a 8th grader 'coached' by Bernard Toone! Barked at by Lefty! Awesome!!!)

agreed. In fact, I wonder what Marquette's outreach is to the Chicago area these days?

Their first commit for next year, Ian Miletic, is from the Chicago area. (Rolling Meadows to be exact.)

I also don't think it matters all that much anyway.

MU's reach is nationwide.  Celebrate.

Yes.  I cannot fathom taking a provincial approach.

What is "Alabama money"? I'd like to know what you know about what Alabama is offering him.

No clue, but feel it's safe to assume Alabama has a considerably larger NIL fund in comparison to MU.  When Arkansas is floating $5 million, Kansas was reportedly at $4 million last year...I would think Alabama and many SEC schools are going to keep pace.

Some coaches (especially if they happen to be at Marquette) land quality players because they're good recruiters selling a quality program.
Other coaches only land good players because they drop a bag.
Nate Oats, despite his record of on-court success and getting players to the NBA, is the obviously the latter and Cam Ward would only choose Alabama because of the money.
There's no sour grapes or resentment whatsoever in these comments.

So you admit that you have no idea what anybody is paying, but you know MU can't keep pace with any of the big boys?

Rutgers is clearly paying a pretty penny for their men's basketball roster.  Why did Nigel James decide to come to MU when Rutgers was a finalist?

If Bama is going to offer 3x+ what MU can offer Cam Ward, why would Ward even include MU as a finalist?  Just stringing Shaka along?

Why has a guy like Kam Jones stuck around at MU when he could've got much more money hitting the portal?

Maybe just realize you don't know what MU can and cannot pay and see where things go.  Shaka has been competing just fine with the big boys in his 3 years here.  Until MU falls behind, maybe just enjoy it rather than being constantly worried about it.

This makes sense. And so does this:

Personally, I can't get myself to fret too much about this stuff. So far, Shaka & Co. seems to have a pretty good handle how to handle the "new normal."

Combine that with the fact that we hear so-and-so is getting X dollars from School Y only to find out later that he didn't get anywhere near that, and it seems counterproductive to worry endlessly about "what if."
