Duke ties.  Obviously knows basketball.   Imaging being a high school kid being recruited by a perennial NBA all star.

The problem, of course, would be convincing "a perennial NBA all star" to put in the long hours and-relatively speaking to what he makes on investments-low pay of a college assistant coach.

I don't see it.
You actually have a degree from Marquette?

No...and after reading many many psosts from people on this board that do...I have to say I'm MUCH better off, if this is the type of "intelligence" a degree from MU gets you. It sure is on full display I will say that.

If Grant Hill said that he had a desire to coach college basketball, he would be entertaining offers from a few high major programs by the end of the week.  Grant Hill's name and pedigree alone would get him a head coaching job at some high or mid major program.

Tums Festival

With all the money he made during his playing career plus his cushy TV gig, there wouldn't be any reason for him to take a job like that.

Grant Hill made close to $150 Million just in NBA salaries. He is a future NBA Hall of Famer. He could maybe get an NBA head coaching job like Jason Kidd recently did.

It is literally more likely that I will be named an assistant coach at Marquette than Grant Hill.

Speaking of Grant Hill, I just stumbled onto this article. Nice words for Wojo and MU. Turns out the job Wojo almost left Duke for previously was............Dayton.

Grant Hill: 'Steve Wojciechowski Will Be A Great Coach'

(Credit: Rich Barnes/Getty Images)

For a team that lost in the first round of the NCAA Tournament, Duke has dominated the March Madness headlines thanks to two people: Jabari Parker and Steve Wojciechowski.

We'll start with Parker.

While fellow freshman phenom Andrew Wiggins has already declared for the NBA Draft, Parker, a sure top-five pick, has remained silent. Might he return to Durham for his sophomore season?

"I don't know," former Duke and NBA standout Grant Hill said on The Morning Show. "I know Jabari a little bit, but I have no sort of knowledge of what his decision-making process is, but I do think he's torn. I think he understands the opportunity to go to the NBA and to go high in the draft possibly, but I do think he enjoys being a student-athlete. He enjoys his time in college.

"You've seen others who have announced and made their decision, and he's still going through it, trying to figure it out. Selfishly, I hope he stays, as a Duke fan. But I know he's going to do what's best for him and his family. To be 18, 19 years old and to have those two decisions – it's a tough decision, but he's in a good place."

Wojciechowski, meanwhile, has left Duke to become the next head coach at Marquette. Wojciechowski played for Mike Krzyzewski in the mid-1990s and had coached under him since 1999.

"I think it's a great move for him," Hill said. "It's a great first job. About three or four years ago, he had a chance to get the Dayton job and I think turned it down. That would have been a great first job, too. But to go to Marquette, (which) has had a great history and tradition of basketball, he's in a great conference, (it's) his first time coaching – it's great. I'm happy for him. He's been at Duke a long time. He certainly is ready. He learned from the best. And he has a chance to go off on his own now and make his mark. I'm happy for him, and I'm excited for his future. I guess I got to get a Marquette T-Shirt now. I'm happy for WoJo, and he'll be a great coach."

The vacancy on Duke's bench might not last long, as Jay Williams is reportedly interested in taking Wojciechowski's place.

"Why haven't I got a call?" Hill joked.

Wait, is Hill, who won two national championships at Duke, interested in coaching?

"You never say never," the seven-time NBA All-Star said. "Here's the deal. I've been in the grind for the last 19 years playing. I've always marveled at Jason Kidd and the fact that he could just retire and then three days later take on the job of being a coach. I need to get away from it a little bit. And certainly doing some media, doing television, I get a chance to stay around it, but not get caught up in that grind day-to-day.

"You never want to rule out the possibility of coaching, but I kind of like where I'm at right now. I'll enjoy that."

"future hall of famer"? i like the guy and he did post "hall of fame" numbers his first 6 years in the nba, BUT, he unfortunately spent the next 12 years injured and consequently, his numbers fell way off.  regardless, who knows how good of a coach he could be.  i sure do like his chances and to have a college hall of famer and prominent nba player approach me as a high school baller?  i'm poppin wood.  i believe marquette would be a great start for grant hill and a pr coup for us.  hiill, if then proven effective, could then write his own ticket.  he seems like too nice a guy to coach at nba level however.  at college level, he would command attention

..and wojo is getting ready for his "2nd" job.  At least Hill seemed to consider us a better 1st job than Dayton.

About 99% of them are getting ready for their 2nd job.

Roy Williams used Kansas to get ready for his 2nd job. Pitino used Kentucky to get ready for his next job, and it certainly appears Calipari is doing the same right now. Al McGuire tried to use Marquette (back when we were a blueblood) to get ready for his 3rd job, but MU wouldn't let him leave for the Bucks. Etc., etc., etc.

I'm not saying anybody in this thread is fixated on this, but the recent fixation on this line of thinking is dopey. Let Wojo do his thing and we'll see what happens. If he does well, he obviously could leave for his 2nd job, perhaps as K's successor, and we'll survive quite nicely. If he doesn't do well, we'll dump him, because there's no "loyalty" on that end of it, either.

In the context of Grant Hill's glowing remarks about Marquette and the Big East, I took "great first job" as meaning it's better than a coach's typical first head coaching job at Southwesternnorthern East Carolina State.

The point is Wojo is in the big time NOW.

According to this statistical analysis, in the entire history of the NBA Grant Hill is the 136th most probable player to make the Hall of Fame. This puts him ahead of many players in the HOF. Add in the consideration he deserves for overcoming massive injuries, and I'll bet my life Grant Hill makes the HOF.

Grant Hill almost surely will make the Naismith Basketball Hall of Fame.

Unlike the football and baseball halls, in basketball, the totality of one's career is considered -- including college and pro (and even high school and coaching and officiating and both genders, etc.).

There is a separate college hoops hall, but that's comparatively small potatoes.

There is only one Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame. It "celebrates basketball," period, and it is not called the Pro Hall or NBA Hall for a reason. Many of its enshrinees played little if any pro ball.

Agreed.  Hill wasn't being prophetic with his words.  It was a compliment to the highest degree.  Nonetheless, I wouldn't want him on the coaching staff.  He doesn't have any coaching experience and ,frankly, I don't see him as the recruiting type.

I agree. It IS Wojo's first head coaching job. That's a fact. Nothing precludes it, as unlikely as it would be, from being his last head coaching job as he is happy here.  But I took it simply as it is his first and it is great. Go Wojo!

And:

ACC Player of the Year
Twice NCAA All American
Two time NCAA Champion
NBA Rookie of the Year
7 time NBA All Star
5 time All NBA Team
1996 Olympic Gold Medal

What a terrible recruiting type.

That said, he would never be an NCAA Assistant Coach, but he has the star power for other things, like his current analyst gig.

Wade's comments after Wojo got hired made it sound like he may be interested in an assistant coaching role.  Something to the effect of wanting to help Wojo out with the program in whatever capacity he can... when the time is right.

Pending on his knees he still has 3 years left in him. However, if he wants to be able to walk when hes older he may want to consider hanging them up soon.

I would give Wade an open ended invitation to become an assistant at Marquette whenever he is ready. I can't imagine him not being one of the best recruiters ever. Can you picture him showing up at a recruits door!? We would have a top 5 class every year. Of course I think this is all a pipe dream, but it was fun to think about!

Wade has several years left before he retires.  Wade was alluding to the fact that he would help in any way possible to promote MU to help Wojo out.  If you look on Wojo's twitter page, his icon is of him and Dwayne Wade.  I'm sure we will see more imagery of the two in the future.
