Good for him.    Work hard, young man.    Get paid!

Vander Blue, an undrafted guard out of Marquette, has agreed to a partial guarantee on a camp deal with Philadelphia, league source tells Y!

Eldon

Youre my boy, Blue!!!!

Great news. Great, great news.

3. Philadelphia (no. 42): The 42nd pick seems far too high to consider Blue, but if the Sixers trade back in the second round he may be a nice fit for such a young team. Jrue Holiday is quickly becoming one of the top young point guards in the game and he's the only court general under contract for next season. Blue may not do as well in a slower-paced offense, meaning he'd need to have dominated his individual workout with the Philly brass. The opportunity is there for Blue to succeed, and it's a position of need for the 76ers.

Otule's Glass Eye

Hoopsrumors says he is the 17th man on the roster headed into camp. He will have to work his tail off to get one of the last spots. Hope this works out for him.

mileskishnish72

What's a partial gaurantee?

brewcity77

Really glad to see Blue get a shot. If be can work on his point skills, he definitely has the size and athleticism to compete at that level.

It means that even if he doesn't make the team or gets cut he will get some money but his contract isn't fully guaranteed like a first round pick.

One wonders .. so he's the 17th man on the camp roster, fighting for a spot.  One wonders why they gave him any contract at all .. an invite is free.  If they wanted to offer him a spot at the end of camp, I'm sure he'd find it in his heart to sign.  ?????

boyonthedock

Him going to sixers camp means not going to another NBA camp, and he might have had other offers.

Lennys Tap

So is he officially an NBA player now that he signed a contract or does he have to sit on the bench for a game to meet that threshold? Chicos?

On a serious note, that's six guys from MU in the last three years to sign NBA contracts - three of them as free agents. Being "Marquette tough" is making NBA coaches and GMs take notice. Kids who aren't one or two and done should be paying attention too.

Incorrect...go read what I posted months ago directly from the NBA.   On a ROSTER ONCE THE SEASON STARTS....(not preseason).  That's when you become eligible for the NBA Pension and considered a NBA player.

Good luck to Vander.

TAMU, Knower of Ball

Great news. I hope he can work his way onto the team.

Amen. As do I.

Go get it Van! You landed in a great spot. A team with no set lineup at your position [which or whatever that ends up being PG/SG].

And it is a team that is obviously committed to a total rebuild with a new young coach out of nowhere not pressured to win and a guy who doesn't know anyone else any more then he would Vander, and no guys with big contracts they are forced to play instead of Blue if he performs well.

Great gig...and setup on the surface if you ask me.

With no real expectations except development Vander Blue will get a fair shake and a long solid look with the Sixers that he could not have asked for a better place! It's a real blessing...really if you ask me.

This summer MU is rollin. Dwight Bucyks has a two year deal and contract up in Toronto.

Trent Lockett has shockingly to me has a two year deal over  in Sacramento with the Kings.

And Junior Cadougan has a training camp invite here with the Milwaukee Bucks and Vander Blue is now in Philly!

Wow...Stand up Marquette! The residual Crean/Wade/Buzz effect of the MU Brand. Unreal...

Another great fit. Perfect timing, team and place. With any kind of camp or break Vander Blue could be a rotation guy for the Sixers for all we know...Quick tell me, who starts at SG for them? J-Rich?

If they had hired a name coach like Lionel Hollins [Like they should have, he won 50 + games last year and is a former Sixer] I would have had my doubts. But now I think anything can happen now if he impresses. It has worked out for him so far.

Good for him.

They did the same with a couple other players and Philly is well under the cap. By guaranteeing some money, they insure that if Blue has a great preseason, someone else won't offer a contract out from under them. At least that's my read...my guess is whatever is guaranteed is fairly small potatoes for a NBA team and the kind of money they can absorb without blinking.

Probably means he will play in the D-league for Philly.

I was predicting Vander would end up on the end of the bench for a cap-strained contender (and he still may) but Philly looks like a much better situation for him.

Sixers Guards
James Anderson SG
Michael Carter-Williams PG
Jason Richardson SG (likely out until January)
Evan Turner G/F (plays more SF)
Tony Wroten Combo

Anderson and Wroten should be Blue's primary competition for an NBA roster spot (i.e. not in the Sixers D-League). Anderson was claimed off of waivers and has primarily been a D-League guy since being drafted. Wroten was a 1st Round pick last season who came out too early (he played against MU at MSG). He has some game but his shooting ability makes Blue look like Steve Novak. He's owed guaranteed money but could spend some time in the D-League again. IOW, neither guy is a lock to be on the NBA roster come opening night.

Especially given Richardson's injury, there's a roster spot to be had on this team. Hopefully Vander makes the best of his opportunity.

Silkk the Shaka

Even if he's in the D-League most of the year and only gets a couple 10-day call-ups, that's still ~$100k more than he would have made at MU this year. Glad he found a home, and hope he impresses enough like Wesley to earn a full-time roster spot. Thanks fora Big East championship, 2 S16s and an E8! And for embarrassing Bucky in the recruiting process. Really couldn't ask for more!

well stated.

Blue probably woulda been paid more this season had he stayed in school at UK.

Well at least he goes to my favorite NBA team.  That's awesome.  Good for Blue!
