This is probably a dumb question but let's say when people dvr games and shows on fs1, does that have the same impact as actually watching it live in regards to ratings etc?

They have started tracking same day and same day +7 ratings. Whether they're getting data from the cable companies because they can see what the DVRs are doing or if it's just the regular Nielsen-style info, I can't help you.

Not a dumb question at all.  It's called C3 and is tracked by Nielsen.  There's been a push to expand C3 to a longer window.  Basically if you watch the show live or within 3 days on your DVR it is captured in the C3 ratings.  C3 started in 2005.

Networks want C3 to become C7....gives them more ratings, more GRPs.  Advertisers, well they have a different view of this...at least some of them do.  Currently, C7 is not in play but folks like Les Moonves at CBS believes it will be the new ratings currency in 2014.  It's coming, just a matter of when.

Thanks for the info. I can see why advertisers probably see this from an entirely different perspective. They can't be a fan of DVR in general.

Does the average sports fan even know Fox Sports 1 exists?  If not for Marquette and the Big East I wouldn't know.

Hopefully they will drop some more commercials during NFL games to increase the awareness.

I am not a tv expert, this is just one guy's opinion. Sorry for the wall of text.

I doubt the average sports fan is too interested yet. There are a couple of decent blocs that have pretty strong interest. I am a member of 2 of them (Marquette/Big East and UFC). At this point we are looking at UFC fans tuning in when there's Interesting programming for them (example being the recent card with Chael Sonnen, big name=decent ratings), and less so for a Wednesday fight night (pretty much just us hard-core fans). The Ultimate Fighter has been on the decline for a couple of years, even us avid fans are starting to get a little tired of it (that's the UFC's reality show, for those who don't know). I would assume NASCAR events are similar. I watch FS1 when there's UFC programming on, or if FS Live is on. If it's NASCAR (which I don't really care for) I keep channel surfing. Big 12 football fans most likely tune in for their games, but probably tune back out when something else is on. Big East fans will likely do the same once the season starts. All told, the channel will probably grow a decent amount as the year wears on as a byproduct of the niche fanbases it currently has, but will hopefully take off more when the big leagues get some compelling programming on there (MLB, and possibly NBA in the future).

It always runs on the bottomline on FSN during their games.

It's great for us, not great for FS1.  They are really getting killed right now and those games are not going to move the needle for them.
Correct, it will not be moving the needle but what else does FS1 have to show during the week.

Live games are always the best way to go, per the guys on the Sports Business Journal on the Tim Brando Show.

In conversations with the folks from Fox, are they aware that FS1 is only on the Top 200 and above packages on Dish Network?  Is anything being done by Fox to try to move it to a lower tier (ie. Top 120 or Top 120+)???

I imagine far less than half of DISH's subscribers have FS1 in their living rooms.

But it's part of the sports package, which is what you really want if you're a true sports fan, who are the only people needing FX1.

Adding the sports package to the top 120 is cheaper than going for the top 200.  I imagine for a network to get added to the top 120 would cost some cash.

In terms of college basketball, this says to me that Fox wants to put their faith in Marquette as a program. The combination of a rising program with their own trademark style and a recognizable coach as the flagship reminds me of how ESPN treated Duke back in the 1990s. Worked out well for the Blue Devils. If Fox can mount some legitimate competition to ESPN over the next decade, it's possible we could see a similar ascent. Maybe I'm too optimistic.

Is FS1 part of the Multi-Sport pack?  (Not according to DISH's poor website.)  What programming packages do you have?
