Larry Williams Exclusive Part I: FOX, NCAA Tournament crucial to future success

Written by: Andrei Greska

With the excitement of March Madness and the basketball season as a whole coming to an end, it's now time to look more closely at the "new" adventure Marquette and nine of its closest basketball friends are about to embark ... Continue reading →

Really sounds like a guy who wants to deemphasize basketball and make us into another SLU.
Have some patience, FFS.

lab_warrior

He's wearing that worn out hat again!  Doesn't he know he's
supposed to be representing the high SARTORIAL standards of
Marquette University?!

Ardmore Mug

Im sorry, but I must be missing something. I DON'T see where he is saying/trying to deemphasize BB..
Please help me see the light..  ?-(

Also, guz, teal=sarcasm on this board.

For those of us who choose to use it.
Have some patience, FFS.

Did you read the article? He spends a lot of time speaking about risk, big concerns, strong reservations, and angst. This is not a man who wants a bright future for Marquette. Don't ever forget: Larry Williams is a Notre Dame alum and a football player.

I see that you're new, when posters use teal they are being sarcastic. Also, since you're new, get prepared for used-up, poorly crafted jokes, constantly rehashing bad takes from a very small percentage of posters.

More advice, anything over 5 pages, don't read. It's a lot of what I've wrote above. They complain about people creating long threads about uninformed opinions, but half of the posts are people refuting claims and using inside "teal" jokes. Lastly, if you post anything borderline negative, you know nothing about basketball or Marquette because you've only had 10 posts and don't understand the game.

Hope that helps, and enjoy your time on the scoop.

Please....please....just stop.  If we have ever learned anything about interviews, especially written ones, you only get the part of the story the media delivers to you.  The written word also has no context of inflection, tone, etc...it's all up to the reader.

I'm going to kill her  (someone might interpret that as a statement of rage)
I'm going to kill her  (someone might interpret that as a tongue in cheek comment)

I know you're just trying to push buttons here on this, but he's done fine thus far in a troubling environment.  He is exactly right about the ESPN risk, something several of us spoke about months ago.  The good news is that FOX is awesome an promotion and I think they will do a good job.  The downside is that everyone knows where to find ESPN on their TV, it's going to take quite some time for Fox Sports 1 to become a destination channel, or a default choice...there will be growing pains.  He's just being honest about it which is refreshing.

Are you optimistic that, say 10 years from now, FS1 will be a serious threat to ESPN's throne?

Having done the interview and written the story, you couldn't be further from the truth.

He spent two minutes at the end of a 20 minute interview talking about that because I specifically asked him about it. It's bad enough when people make conjecture out of thin air, but drawing that conclusion from what was written shows that your hatred of the man doesn't allow you to think clearly. You strike me as a smart man, but you come off beyond foolish with declarations such as these.

Boom chucka lucka!

But I do think I'll take Larry a new hat next time I see him.  Wonder if he knows the inside joke?

Niv Berkowitz

How dare Larry Williams give ANY interviews talking about the new conference he helped build, and Marquette University. It's always about him, him, him!

Good question...10 years is a long way off...near future I will say no.  That's not their goal, at least that's not what they are publicly saying for the short term.  I had a brief meeting with them last week, I have another on the 29th.  They are right now trying to position themselves to the pay tv distributors as a solid sports product in the $1.00 to $1.50 per sub area.  ESPN gets north of $5.   ESPN controls most of the content right now and for many years to come it is locked up.

For Fox to challenge ESPN toe to toe, they would really have to spend like crazy.  That doesn't mean Hill, Shanks, Chase Carey won't do that, but because of where the rights are with MLB, NFL, NASCAR, SEC (about to launch a major initiative with ESPN), and on and on, FOX won't really even have the opportunity to go toe to toe.  They'll try to pick up rights here and there and make a dent where they can.  Our conference will get a lot of love because we will be a flagship product of theirs, but will eyeballs go there as much as ESPN in the early years?  I would say no....I could be dead wrong, but that's the early thinking.  This is going to be a process that is built with patience over a number of years.

I agree with you Chicos. There are very few fans that dislike more the smugness of No Dick fans than myself. It seems that Williams was instrumental along with several other schools in making the Catholic 7 into the New Big East, without football. That tells me that he certainly has the best interests of MU athletics at heart, even though he is a ND man. My guess is that the same people that criticize Williams because he is from ND and woud blast him if he went to ND would give Buzz a pass if he slid off to a Texas job. Hwever, I do reserve the right to always be critical of the Hated Fighting Irish.
I thought you were dead. Willie lives rent free in Reekers mind.

muwarrior69

Back in the CUSA days the only way I got to see an MU game here in New Jersey was by subscribing to ESPN Full Court. Quite frankly I don't care what channel their on as long as I can watch. I believe that is true for fans who follow their school. The only time I watched the BTN was when MU played Wisconsin because that was the only channel that carried the game. The big state schools get the casual fan because they identify with their home state. In the beginning the only fans to watch Fox 1 will be Big East fans; not so much the casual college basketball fan. Hope Fox plays up the new channel and the Big East during NFL games. If they do that it would show their level of commitment to their new sports channel and the Big East.
I guess will have to wait and see.

Hope you are kidding otherwise those are some pretty dumb conclusions.

Dr. Blackheart

My close friends and next door neighbors growing up had 7 Domers.  People from my work are Domers.  Friends I know married Domers.  But if it is 1:30 in the AM, and MU had just kicked their arse, they are in Real Chili with me getting pelted unmercifully with oyster crackers, as they very well deserve to be.  Allegiances, ladies and gentlemen.  Allegiances

Are you sh1tting me, Chico?? I was kidding. Frankly, I have no probs with LW. I think the whole drama about him is just that.

I'm guessing keefe's sarcastic remarks had the teal omitted intentionally, keeping in step with a theme in this thread.

I don't often defend keefe, but settle down....his comments were sarcasm.

Yah, I know, it's tough to believe that from him.

Keefe was right on one account.  LW is a nose pickin, good for nothin, egg sucking, baby hatin', Prius driving, hairy arm pit women lovin', puppy killin', global warmin' believer, christmas and easter hatin' DOMER.  Pure evil.

Happy Friday everyone one!!!

edit....he beat me to it ^^^^^

Just one correction. Your description would work better if LW had attended Cal or NYU. ND doesn't strike me as overly liberal.
