How could Illinois all the sudden be so much better than us
« on: November 22, 2012, 10:38:16 AM »
They beat a USC team that we only beat by 8 by 30 points
and beat Butler by 20 points a team we lost to by 1.
After seeing Illinois Dominate i am concerned about this team

So North Carolina should be even more worried?
“All men dream; but not equally. Those who dream by night in the dusty recesses of their minds wake in the day to find that it was vanity; but the dreamers of the day are dangerous men, for they may act out their dreams with open eyes, to make it possible.” - T.E. Lawrence

Wow.  Well, they've always had talent - Richardson and Paul are really good and were pretty highly recruited.  A lot of factors here - it's a long season, Groce's defense/offensive schemes differ greatly from Webber's, and Butler was realllllly tired.  Marquette's gonna be okay...

Well by your same logic, Illinois beat Colgate 75-55. We beat Colgate 84-63. Are we 1 point better than Illinois?

Point is, every game is different and all that matters are W's.

Who cares how much Illinois beat those teams by? The transitive property in basketball is NONEXISTENT.

Illinois always had lots of talent. They now are a veteran team with a new coach.

They could be very good this year(although the big 10 will test them big time)....that doesn't mean we won't be good.

ps. they are killing teams with the 3 pointer. 4 guys on the floor at virtually all times who can shoot it.

But in English grammar, it is my understanding that a "transitive" verb is followed by a direct object.  Just asking.

What you say is true.

However, previous posters are referring to a different meaning of transitive, a mathematical concept, to wit.

Transitive Property of Equality

The following property: If a = b and b = c, then a = c. One of the equivalence properties of equality.

Note: This is a property of equality and inequalities. One must be cautious, however, when attempting to develop arguments using the transitive property in other settings.

Here is an example of an unsound application of the transitive property: "Team A defeated team B, and team B defeated team C. Therefore, team A will defeat team C."

No...and after reading many many psosts from people on this board that do...I have to say I'm MUCH better off, if this is the type of "intelligence" a degree from MU gets you. It sure is on full display I will say that.

Kenosha, do us all a favor and go play chicken with an oncoming semi.

I'll simply say that Illinois looks pretty good.  And if I were one of those Bucky haters I'd want them to crush the Badgers.  Oh wait..... that'll impact our RPI.... Oh the conflict.....

hmm thats not very nice. Point is, its so early in the season, that some teams will get hot, especially with a veteran squad with talent...I would rather get hot in late Feb and March rather than now. Win to learn from it, lose to learn from it, dominate when it counts.

First, to reach an "Illinois is so much better than Marquette" conclusion based upon a few games is silly.

Second, as a guy who lived in Chicago for years and was very into the state sports scene, I can assure you that for the last few years, Illinois fans have been wondering: "How could Marquette all of a sudden be so much better than us?"

One legitimate reason to worry is that they beat us out for the recruitment of Kendrick Nunn and we may compete with them in the future for IL prospects.

Nunn went to Illinois because they had more playing time to offer his freshman year.  Illinois will not have as much to offer future Kendrick Nunns once they get better recruits.

We also stole Isaac Chew from them and didn't blink an eye after losing out on Nunn, grabbing JaJuan Johnson and John Dawson. JJ is probably an equal if not better option, and time will telll with Dawson. Not worried about them in the least.
