If Love becomes an elite QB - or at least a very good one - the Packers will have a chance. If he doesn't, being a true contender becomes unlikely if not impossible.

That's # 1, 2 and 3 when it comes to the team's future.

But yes, he needs better WRs to throw to, and the defense needs help.

The Packers are flush with draft capital and cap space.

Jaire Alexander will have to restructure his contract or be traded.  He's a bit of an odd duck so I'm fine with him leaving despite the lack of talent at the position.

WR, Edge, and CB are clearly the positions of need.

LUCKILY, there are no real losses to free agency at the moment.  The only person that would really be missed is Josh Meyers and there is plenty of money to do that deal.

Are there Packers fans out there who actually think just give LaFleur some more players, Jordan Love play better and all will be fine and we'll be competing for a Super Bowl?  LaFleur is actually regressing as a coach.  He doesn't know how to improve things and the players don't respect him.  I feel like we're in Wojo territory with LaFleur.  Wins just enough (over mediocre to lousy teams) to keep his job and Gutekunst/Murphy have no guts to make the change that is needed.  Maybe Policy will be far less tolerant of this.

My gripe with Lafleur this year was that he coached scared. He wasn't good in 4th and go situations, and when he made the right call to go, called vanilla plays that really weren't consistent with how he normally called plays.

We won't know all that went into this year, the injuries, et al, but it seemed like he lost faith in his own playbook.

This year will be telling. You have to think they will be aggressive given so few of their players are FAs. I don't think there's a real risk of moving on before 27, but the seat could get warmer if they underwhelm when it matters most.

I like Kellen Moore and Brian Flores.  I'd even kick the tires on Pete Carroll.  He knows how to win, lead, and motivate.   He's better than LaFleur.

I've said it before that LaFleur is a good locker room guy and a smart offensive coach who isn't always great with game management. If they regress next year like I think they will, they should wipe the slate clean with both the GM and coach.

Pete Carroll is SEVENTY THREE years old.  Maybe we just dig up Vince, and let his corpse do the play calling.

Having said that, Lefleur is a larger part of the problem than people want to admit.  His clock management, down and distance, and 4th down calls were some of the worst in football.  The lack of play action, despite having a great running game is silly.

Here is a dirty little secret, the players that threw the most play action passes this year are

1 Goff
2 Stafford
3 Darnold
4 Herbert
5 Murray
6 Stroud
7 Mayfield
8 Nix
9 Rodgers (!)
10 Jackson
11 Mahomes
12 Allen
13 Love
14 Daniels

Do you see what they all have in common except Rodgers and Kyler Murray?  They're all playoff QBs.  What a coincidence!

Lefleur repeatedly used plays that didn't work, and the players have lacked discipline since he took over.  Not to mention he seems to really only hire his buddies... some of which don't have the best track record... Halfley being the exception, but he's been at it a year as DC.

Love is not the problem.  The WRs are one of, if not the largest, weakness on the team.  Love's receivers have the highest drop rate in football.  Yet the metrics show Love is easily one of the top QBs.  Sure, he sails some passes, and under throws others, but I think we've been a tad spoiled the last 15 years with one of the all time best.

My guess is the Packers will let Gutekunst blow his financial wad this year and next before they consider moving on from him and Lefleur, though an especially bad year could see MLF looking for a job.  Especially if the roster holes are filled via FA and there is no improvement or there is a regression.

You'd think with the running game they had with Jacobs, play-action would be a no brainer.

I'll find the quote but MLF said after the season that the undercenter play action was less effective for them than the shotgun play action/ read options they ran so much. Not sure I buy that as a constant - some of this is something they couldn't do for nearly half the season because of Loves's injuries. But that doesn't explain what we saw down the stretch.

MLF's self-scouting this offseason better be on-point
