OT - Questions for Badger Football Fans
« on: December 13, 2014, 10:04:43 AM »
The recent badger football news really intrigues me for one main reason, money.

We have now heard two coaches say the budget limitations on coaching salaries hurt them.  Gary Anderson was making less than Buzz.

My question is why?
My next question is where is the money going?

The BTN has dropped a ton of cash into the schools.  Safe to assume UW is using it differently?  MSU pays their DC 1MM.  Is UW using BTN to help expand University offerings for the whole campus?  I don't think that is wrong, I'm just curious.  They obviously have the money.  If anything UW's approach is commendable.

Curious to what informed UW fans think.

I found an interesting site that allows you to look up any salary within the Wisconsin University system:

http://host.madison.com/data/uw_salaries/?appSession=174134570971381&RecordID=&PageID=2&PrevPageID=2&cpipage=1&CPIsortType=asc&CPIorderby=Position_Salary

Don't put in a name and you can view from top pay to bottom.

While it doesnt list income from other sources it does indicate that Barry is paid $500K, Bo $400K, Andersen $400K and he 8 assistants that are paid between $241K and $304K.

This must drive academic professors mad.

After the Ohio St. debacle Gary Anderson was just being smart taking a new job, before he got lynched in the next year or two. The same applies to Buzz, after last year's debacle. While some coaches can survive a bad season (see Texas's basketball coach), most would be smart to get out while they can.

Barnes had, what, 12 good years before having a bad one that was screwed up by Myck Kabongo doing a dumb thing?

Really? I would think that it would drive coaches mad that professors have a guaranteed job no matter what they do after a number of years. Can you imagine how glorious tenure would be? If you ask me the security of always having a job is much more preferable than a larger salary.

D-1 coaches and assistants also work harder than the vast majority of college professors.

It wasnt about Andersen's salary, it was claimed that the assistants aren't paid a competitive salary and are quick to move to a different program. The assistant pay ranks 11 in the B1G, though with the exception of OSU, MSU and Mich, all of the big 10 schools pay roughly the same.

Also a suggested reason: Academic standards for players. Andersen did lose a recruit to this but Oregon State's standards are the exact same as UWs.

Ultimately I think there was a rift between Alvarez and Andersen and Andersen left.  Alvarez wanted a run first (and second and 3rd) team, Andersen wanted a spread offense. Guess which one won out?

Please note, I'm not a UW fan, I just work with a ton of them.

Between grants and awards (professors) and promotions (coaches), I wonder who really makes the most money FROM UW.

"Who makes more FOR UW" is a wholly different box of headaches.
