Legacy?
« on: March 22, 2014, 12:40:13 PM »
I live numerous time zones east of the States. This morning, my time, using my mobile telephone I clicked on the pre-programed NCAA scores, read them, and went off and did Saturday stuff.

About an hour ago, I sat down at this computer to see what Scoop had to say about the Providence game, the tournament, and the latest target to be trashed.

When I first starting reading about Coach Williams leaving, I could not fathom what had happened, then I could not understand Virgina Tech (must be a typo ... or, is it an early April Fool's joke), then I asked why in the hell is he was going to VT, and finally I concluded I was circling in one of the rings of Dante's hell.

Well, after reading everything all in one fell swoop - something I would not recommend to any sane person - I concluded that Hunt wrote the best and most insightful article. (I know, I know, but this is the kind of stuff he does really well, as "reporting" is really not his thing.)

The most insightful post was by MUCam under the Cracked sidewalks on why (Larry) Williams left. It is well worth reading, particularly the last paragraph.

A lot of the rest was varying degrees of hysteria, random speculation, half thought through ideas, some mean stuff, and a bunch of wishful thinking. All to which I immediately related.

Reflecting, it struck me that Coach Williams took the first offer that was made (Bama, as usual, you were right re Auburn. Chicos also now seems like the Oracle of Delphi.)

Further reflection, leads to the obvious conclusion that Coach Williams will not be able to use the same "pitch/persona" with recruits, fans, and the national media that he used at Maquette. That is, the country boy, you can trust me, I am all about folks, wearing his religion and sincerity on his sleeve at all times, is now an impeached, if not totally shot, pitch.

With this move, Coach Williams is now just another big time coach, doing what big time coaches do.

This leads me to ask, what is Coach Williams legacy at Marquette? If he had stayed 10 years, I think he would have left a multi-faceted legacy of basketball and a very positive positive/caring social profile. But, now? Seems like an insecure guy, who, as noted by MUCam, is carrying a ton of baggage. Crean left the Al, good attendance, and credibility.
Buzz?

In the end, water finds its own level, and, indeed, in not too many years, we all will know what Coach Williams "level" might be.

As a footnote, the lesson I personally learned from all this, is to either check Scoop hourly, or to never look at it again! javascript:void(0);

Nope, the lonesome cowboy persona worked at MU for 6 plus years--it will work once again in a different locale.
I thought you were dead. Willie lives rent free in Reekers mind.

I think the legacy should be that he surprised a lot of people and had one of the better 5 year runs in MU hoops history.  And then he stumbled on and seemingly off the court to the point where notwithstanding the 5 year run (which will be well and fondly remembered), he may not be missed.
