He's OK Coachin', But A Terrible GM
« on: January 04, 2012, 08:47:46 PM »
There's a reason these jobs are usually separated in professional sports. Too bad college basketball doesn't work the same way. Give Buzz the right balance of talent, and I'm pretty sure he puts a very good team on the court. But, his roster is incomplete. Seems like he constantly has fingers in the dam plugging new found leaks.

Wait till next year.  No DJO or Crowder.  It won't be a leak, it will be a flood.

This team needs a legit 5 and 4 combo (length and rebounding) going on 8 years.

While I agree with the above, in the the recent past our guards were excellent on the ball defenders that could mitigate some of our height disadvantage by making it more difficult for guards to get into the lane for dump offs to the bug guys.  Our current guards (with exception of Blue) are not those kind of defenders.

I think Buzz is usually great at getting a good overall gameplan together, but is way below average as an in-game coach.

And, of course, he's a below average defensive coach.

I wonder what MU's success rate is after a timeout?  Sometimes it seems as if MU comes out more disorganized/confused than before they went into the huddle.

He's a great motivator which makes me surprised his d sucks cause after learning rotations D is 75% effort.

I had this down as a loss coming in. Nonetheless, this is another tough one to swallow. Choking away the lead is brutal.

Maybe it's that his players -- especially Jae and DJO -- don't want to play defense. And Junior  can't.

Tom Crean's fault, right?

Didn't the UNO folks question Buzz's defensive schemes?  I think this is something that has haunted him for some time.  The perimeter double team allows for easy pick n roll opportunities.  It appears the players lack the fundamental understanding of his concepts or they are unable to execute them.

Either way MU will struggle against length, size and athleticism.  Good thing that doesn't exist in the BE

I think MU does have some defensively flawed players.  Crowder and Gardner are really poor defenders.  Cadougan and DWill are slow of foot.  DJO sometimes is interested in D, sometimes not.

Jae just let his guy run right by him on that go ahead 3.  Bad time to take a possession off.

Call me an idiot, I love DJO and before this year loved Jae as well, but I think we will be better without them. DJO is a turnover machine I won't miss his 1 on 3 drives ending in turnovers and I won't miss Jae taking as many 3's as he does. Yes he makes them at a good clip, but we have Todd and DJO for that we need him down low more to draw fouls. I see Todd as a great replacement for DJO and Steve will get a significant amount of playing time next year.

The fact is no injury to Otuel we do not lose this game or the LSU game. Otule was the anchor to our defense. Besides that the game turned when Georgetown stopped turning the ball over and we started turning it over.

I agree with the comment above me. Otule was the glue.
