Memphis or Arizona?
« on: April 05, 2009, 04:40:06 PM »
Thinking about the remaining "big" jobs out there, and I'm curious as to which job you, as a coach, would rather have, Memphis or Arizona.

Memphis has the facilities (FedEx Forum), the booster support (FedEx), but in the end, it's still a CUSA job in many respects.

Arizona's got great weather and a great campus to sell to recruits, a solid, but winnable league in the Pac-10, but seems to be still infected by the tenatcles of Lute Olson.

Discuss.

The General has taken on a new command.

AZ without a doubt.  Memphis is not going to be able to continue its run without Calipari.  They might still dominate the C-USA; but, it won't be anywhere near the same on the national stage.  If Memphis was such a good job, the position would have been filled by now.

All in all Arizona is the better job because of conference.  However, Memphis historically has better access to prospects than Arizona does.  Before Lute got there, Arizona was one of the worst programs in the country.  He did it by getting a bunch of good players from out of state...mostly from the LA area.  It corresponded nicely with the downfall of the UCLA program.

Memphis has a lot of prospects in town, and is close to a lot more.

I really don't think either are all that good to be honest.

This thread seems incomplete...college prowler ranked U of A  with an A+ for girls.  (Marquette got a B)

I'm a U of A guy and I'd say Memphis. Better facilities at Memphis, weather still isn't a drawback.

Unfortunately I think things will have to get worse with Olson before the job gets easier, unless they hire a guy with connections to the program already, which is why I'd like to see them take a relative shot with Pastner. The bad part about Pastner from an MU angle is that he's also well connected in Houston, which may hurt some of the pull BW seems to have in Texas.
