1SE, Zaide missed the Xavier game due to illness.

Quote from: 1SE on Today at 03:35:53 AMYeah, I think he is our best option off the bench - I think we really missed him w X (was he sick? I never saw). Tre is playing because there is no Sean and he is what he is. Every now and then there is a flash - our ceiling rises considerably if he can put it together. The Freshman - if we can get to a situation where 1 of the 3 of them can be a positive on any given night I'd take it.

One game against SH does not definitively spell the end of the Kam funk - but we need him out of that and all of the bench progression above to make the FF
Yes Shaka in post game presser was asked and said Zaide had been sick and couldn't practice.
Goal is National Championship

Discussion about expectations for the bench.    Culture, Defense, Offense, in that order.
NIL discussion.
Thoughts on Ben Gold.

Sounds like Shaka is rolling with the NIL punches but there is a hint of frustration in that interview with the state of NCAA basketball.  Loved the 2 balls on the court at the same time example. As players and coaches we'll just have to adjust.

Oh and definitely wants the freshmen to put on there big boy pants.  Not frustrated with them but laid it out explicitly what will get them more playing time.  Shaka makes it black and white.  The parents of a player, if they have eyes, can only nod their heads if their sons are not getting "enough" playing time.

I think he was diplomatically answering a question that was more directed at the transfers from Seton Hall apparently due to NIL. It was kind of an unfair thing to ask an opposing coach.

No doubt. But the example of the two balls show and underlying component of frustration with the inmates running the asylum.

Inmates running the asylum? That's an awful analogy.

I don't think Sultan was offended, I think he thinks it's a bad analogy. I assume you work or worked at some point and got paid for it. Did that make you an inmate running the asylum?

I do know, Newsie is right on you knowing ball.

The issue has nothing to do with the players and its comical that the NCAA bungled this so badly that people frame the issue this way.  It's like when people used to expect a major league player to take a 'home town discount' for them.

Design a bad system, get a bad outcome.  It's not like players are offering themselves more money to jump to a new school....the 'broader school/booster infrastructure is'.  There are already examples of players not getting the money promised.  Are we surprised players get mad or sit out for that?

This is no endorsement of the current system, but I am hard pressed to blame the players for maximizing their value within the system the NCAA/Schools allowed.

Yeah, this exactly. Players getting paid certainly gives them more leverage than before, but "before" meant nothing but a scholarship and limited ability to move to a new "workplace."

If I was of a conspiracy mindset, I could find enough in his answer about the bench to conclude somebody, a player or parent, has been complaining about playing time.

Shaka used a ridiculous example to say coaches and the NCAA have less and less control.  Some has to do with pay, some has to do with yearly player free agency. He has obviously thought about it enough to bring up that example.  To his credit he states he is rolling with it.

Again, did not mean to offend.  And whatever analogy you want to use where the coaches have less and less control we can use going forward.

I'm not blaming the players either. I think coaches can't help but be a little frustrated in the efforts to build a cohesive successful program. Both sides can be right at the same time.

Coleman has been Hall's only offensive threat all year.  I bet he already has had 15+ offers from other schools since he is a sophomore. He will not be at Hall next year.

Plus, everyone with a brain saw this coming. The NCAA, and many of their member schools, did not. They simply decided to put their head in the sand or run to Congress, instead of developing a system that would provide both compensation for the student-athletes, and more stability for the schools. But now it's a mess.

And I don't have much sympathy for coaches who have to deal with it. They are paid a lot of money to figure stuff out. You have people like Nick Saban who recently said he would rather coach in the NFL than in the NIL era of college football.

Nick, you were making $10 million a year to coach college football. You are now presumably being paid millions to talk about college football. You are 73 years old and are wealthy because of college football. Do you think I care that you wouldn't do it again because it's become harder? LOL. Gimme a break.

I agree with this analysis.  I sensed a little frustration from Shaka in this presser.  And perhaps rightfully so, if he's got a player/parent in his ear about playing time.  Shaka is great with getting young guys minutes/opportunity, and he never yanks a guy for an offensive "mistake."

As he said - you want more PT - get better culturally, defensively, and then offensively.

It was nice to get a "no drama" victory while getting the bench players significant minutes. If nothing else it reduced the wear and tear on the starters who will probably be needed for big minutes on Friday.

The offense was pretty sloppy in the first half but was more cohesive in the third quarter. Hard to draw any conclusions one way or another against a team that weak.

One thing we didn't learn is whether Ross' hand/wrist injury affects his shooting. Maybe he only attempted one outside shot because opportunities didn't present themselves, or maybe he doesn't feel comfortable. Stay tuned

tower912

Just glad Ross is always looking for other ways to impact the game.  A la Stevie.

It is interesting.  You and Tower could be on to something.  He did make it abundantly clear what it took to play at the presser.

Agree with all this. I will add that Ross didn't seem especially concerned about his wrist or hand  when throwing down a violent dunk. Which is good.

Maybe. But will Creighton and St. John's?
They look like the class of league right now. Have not seen Johnnies play, but Creighton looks awesome.

Chase booted after eating at Cousins?  Not the first person to do so.
