Quote from: Uncle Rico on December 14, 2024, 09:21:59 PMSome people process sports results more rationally than others.  Some get mad, some convince themselves their team just sucks, some tip their caps, some get drunk like Muggsy and others move on quickly

I'm not getting drunk.

Quote from: K1 Lover on December 14, 2024, 09:19:59 PMI agree Dayton is good. But are you really a Marquette fan if you're not upset — especially after losing a very winnable game?
It is a fascinating sociological and psychological study and always has been.  As one who rarely comes unglued, losses provide endless entertainment and character revelations.

Speaking of which, surprised that NLW and Farley haven't weighed in yet.

Seems like they are gone. They got tired of having to wait around too long to come over to troll.

As true a sign there is that we've made it

Quote from: GoldenEagles03 on December 14, 2024, 08:51:07 PMIt'll probably never happen because that's college basketball, but I'd love to be able to trust a double digit lead on the road.

They got outscored by 18 in the 2nd half. A good team should never do that.

Oh well, not the end of the world. Just unfortunate.

We're certainly a good team.

Beat UConn and now Marquette.

Yes, I called them as much in a couple Discord chats earlier tonight.

Quote from: Tyler COLEk on December 14, 2024, 08:07:04 PMMarquette wins in a blow out with a fairly officiated game. The three tic-tacs on Kam, and just every call their way in the crucial moments of the game.

One foul on Kam was questionable......the other 2 he deserved.......Shaka said it in the post game....." Kam has got to stop fouling"

Refs always have an impact.......we didn't perform well enough in the 2nd half to blow out Dayton tonight.......Chase post game " we crumbled" " we turned it over too much" " They ran the same p.ay over and over and we didn't stop it"

We lost the 2nd chance points and the points off turnover battle......and ultimately that was the difference......we can lose one of those and overcome it .........but not both......not like that.

E played a crap 2nd half and lost......the players know it......the coach knows it........it's ok for fans to admit it.

It's not the end of the world but that's what happened.

On to Butler.

Yeah I see what you're talking about. Naturally I'd expect other fans to be disappointed/upset after a loss since that shows they care.

What I didn't expect, however, is for so many people to act like we're suddenly having the same season as Seton Hall. If this is what Scoop is like after a Q1 loss with arguably the best MU team we've had in ages, I can't imagine what it was like a few years ago.

The Thing

I'm not disappointed that we lost but it's how we lost. I always felt that Shaka was a second half guy and we have seen so many examples of the guys just turning it up a notch in the second half. To see us kind of wilt like that was really uncharacteristic.

I definitely do not blame the refs. It was just poor play in the second half overall. I know Kam was dealing with the fouls but other than that early 3 pointer he had a very poor second half.

I kind of felt like I was watching Dayton Out-Marquette us in the second half. Getting easy shots, forcing turnovers, making threees.

You're right in that we tend to be much better in the second half; Shaka and staff have proven that they're usually really good at making second-half adjustments. But as I mentioned either earlier in this thread or another, there's not much there to adjust when you have an exceptional first half, and that can be a disadvantage like it was tonight.

If anything, I think this loss just further demonstrates that, for whatever reason, we struggle to maintain large leads against highly competitive opponents. Not entirely sure how one improves that, but we'll definitely need to get better at it if we want to make a deep run in March.

Disagree that this was out of character.  We have been terrible defending inbounds plays under opponents basket all year.

What? We have Ben, everybody's boy. We have Parham, who spends all his time jacking 3s, just like Ben. Shaka allows this.
This game exposed it all about thus team. Out hustled, out muscled, outrebounded by smaller guys. Totally totally, totally unacceptable and unexcused. When you get outplayed by a good mid major, that is what you are, a mid major.
Now let the drum roll begin in  two...one...but the zebras, but Kams fouls, but life in the road, etc. There were plenty of bone headed plays made by Kam, by Mitchell by GooollllddddBrick. That out of bounds play where he received the ball and then handed it to the opponent for an easy toss in was a doozy. Maybe it was plays like that caused him to be bounced from New Zealand national team. When you vet players are not getting it done, this is what happens.
6 ranking? No.

Lots went wrong before, but Royce's 3pa at 4:02 was really a head scratcher to me. It wasn't a particularly open look and one that Chade or Kam probably could have got with Royce in position to rebound. I like Royce, and I know no one was really grooving then, but even having him on the floor there was a but odd.

The other thing that struck me was the we really were *unlucky* with bounces, etc. While some of that might have been effort, it just seemed like thar rebounds, tap outs, etc all just seemed to fall right into their hands. A particularly egregious on was that late 3 of theirs that airballed in the face of pretty good D and fell right into dude's hands for an easy put back. Again, lots went wrong we were in control of, but the basketball gods didn't seem to.be doing us any favors.

Anyway, losing sucks. It would have been awesome to be in the 1-seed drivers seat going into conference play. I don't think there's any silver lining here, but fortunately we have a team that should still very much contend for a BE title and a protected seed.
