Quote from: duanewade on December 14, 2024, 08:55:24 PMWell Dayton gets last laugh, yet again.  We couldn't even beat them with Dwyane Wade on our side.  Time to just throw in the towel and water down the Big East more by adding Dayton and St. Thomas.  The Big East has become an embarrassment anyways with another disastrous non-conference season and early flameouts every March besides one other school not named Marquette.  We've proven time and time again we can't even handle Dayton regardless of who our coach is so I guess we're both mid-majors. Maybe they were the biggest game on our schedule, and not the other way around.  Congrats to Mike Broeker for exposing us as frauds with his "brilliant" scheduling.  Hopefully they'll beat us again next year at home to show they are more Big East worthy than we are.

Sadly, my preseason concerns about this team were exposed tonight.  You can't consistently win without any inside post play and rebounding.  Caeden Hamilton is our only player who is a classic 5 who can score with his back to the basket and rebound.  However it's pretty clear he won't be the answer this year... and he hasn't shown much for me to believe he'll be the answer going forward beyond this year either.

I thought maybe this team might be different and be able to always beat a team they are better than, which last two year's teams couldn't do with constant losses to average Wisconsin teams.  With a ten point lead at half it looked that this team might be different and mentally stronger, however the second half provided all the answers we needed to know about this team.  In short we are not a top 10 team and our ceiling is another Sweet 16... and sadly even that looks unlikely now.

Quote from: mugrad_89 on December 14, 2024, 08:12:39 PMThe lack of rebound in the second half was the most frustrating part. For the most part, it was the Dayton guards that were destroying us on the offensive glass.

That moment when Chase jumped up and caught the rebound with both hands, only to somehow lose it to a Dayton guard...

Can't remember the last time I yelled that loudly in disbelief.

I haven't been around long enough. Can someone tell me if this is one if the jokingly sarcastic personas or just an idiotic fairweather fan who only chirps when we lose?

IMO, first time this year that Shaka was out-coached. MU generally comes out in the 2nd half and it's clear that they are going to be the better 2nd half team. Tonight, not so much.

It's certainly not the former.

We R Final Four

Quote from: tower912 on December 14, 2024, 08:05:53 PM1. Kam goes out, Dayton goes press and zone.  Wise.
2. It appeared in the first half that MU spent their week practicing defense.  Less so in the second half.
3.  Rebounding was the PROBLEM
4. Kam, perhaps you should consider not making cheap fouls.  Needed the all American tonight.
5. Freshmen looking more like freshmen. Good and bad.  Growing pains are part of the process.
6. Quit moving on offense.  One of the things that always stands out to me. When a team stands still, they lose.
7. The announcers were right.  That arena was waiting to explode.
8.  MU struggled to defend in bounds plays.  Out of character.
9.  The first time all season MU has played a crap half with a full roster.
10. Stand around on offense, fail to secure defensive rebounds and you get the outcome you earn.
11.  Congrats to Dayton. They earned it.

8. Out of character? Hardly....defending opponents inbound plays has been a Shaka issue.

Yeah. Honestly I wish this wasn't the case but Grant won that second half. He's a good coach.

Downside of doing tremendously well in the first half is that doesn't really allow Shaka to make his famous second-half adjustments.

He's a good coach and that's a good team, especially at home.

21Jumpstreet

Total bummer, poor effort in the second half, really surprised Stewie got out worked and made uncharacteristic poor decisions. Chase is a dude. Lost our edge, confidence, whatever in the second half, did not look at all like the MU that has shown up this year. Frustrated because we had it in hand and fumbled it away. Move on, win the next one.

I don't get why people are so upset.

Dayton beat UCONN by 18 and should've probably beat Iowa State.

They are just good.

Because they blew a 13 point second half lead and lost it in a way that was not like how Shaka has lost games here.

Believe me, I am not "upset." But it's obvious why people are disappointed. Did you even watch?

I agree Dayton is good. But are you really a Marquette fan if you're not upset — especially after losing a very winnable game?

Some people process sports results more rationally than others.  Some get mad, some convince themselves their team just sucks, some tip their caps, some get drunk like Muggsy and others move on quickly
