Miami turns it over a few seconds later and now Miami has 1 less timeout to try to hold them to a field goal and tie the game.

Where does Indiana's coach go next? Feel like Florida and Florida State could both do worse than him.

Florida isn't firing Napier this year and doubtful Noles move on from Norvell, at least that is what it sounds like.

If Cignetti does move, this is the year to do it.  Brought in a lot of transfers, easy schedule.

Ole Miss has really kicked the snot out of Georgia today.  Only a 12-point lead but doesn't feel like Georgia has threatened since the first series of the game

Indiana flat in trap game vs Michigan. Still win, 10-0 going into their showdown at OSU.

Herman Cain

Was delighted to see Seminoles fall to 1-9. Thought they were too good for ACC and now they can barely win a game

Huge day in the WIAC yesterday.  Many results that will directly impact Marquette:

UW-Stout 45 UW-Oshkosh 42

UW-Platteville 56 UWEC 14

UW-River Falls 45 UWSP 17

UW-La Crosse 24 UW-Whitewater 21

The Hippie Satan of Hyperbole

Watching Alabama just clobber LSU last night leaves me wondering exactly what LSU is going to do with Brian Kelly. He is a high floor coach, but one that rarely wins games he's not supposed to. Even if they hypothetically COULD afford to let him go, who are you going to get? I guess schools are going to go for Dan Lanning, who I think should just stay out in Oregon because the B10 is easier than the SEC and he has the only good program in the west right now. But in reality there just aren't enough Nick Sabans for schools that have Nick Saban-like aspirations.

Cignetti will be a hot commodity this off-season but he's 63 and I'm not sure he leaves Indiana after one year.

Honestly, they're going to have to get lucky on the next hire.  We think so many coaches are sure things when they get hired somewhere and then flame out.  That LSU defense just  flat flat out lacks the studs of previous Tiger teams.

Kirby Smart and Dan Lanning were assistants.  Is LSU willing to go that route?  Is there someone at that level currently that can be the next Kirby or Lanning?

With all the realignment, I can see why the Big 12 commissioner might be wanting to focus on some basketball only schools.

The Big12 really doesn't have any elite football programs, the ACC is weak too, but at least they have Clemson (and although terrible this year FSU). The Big12 has no one.

Longer term all of this realignment is going to hurt college sports as it becomes clear for football that it is the Big10 an SEC as their own elite leagues and then a bunch of other also rans conferences.

That's what they want.  They're begrudgingly including other leagues in the playoff.  I have little doubt both leagues will demand and get 4 teams in the playoff each year

Why does that hurt college sports? There's going to be plenty of eyeballs watching college football, but they'll just be primarily watching the B10 and SEC.

Results from the Big 10 yesterday.  Many of these games will have direct impact on Marquette.

Penn St. throttled Washington in Happy Valley, 35-6.  Huskies in the woods.

Oregon sleepwalk to a 39-18 win over Maryland who is happily cashing those fat TV checks as they remain irrelevant

Indiana won ugly over a pedestrian Michigan team, 20-15.  Did the Wolverines defense give Ohio State a game plan to deal with Indiana?

Ohio State took care of Purdue, 45-0 in a classic Big 18 laugher.

Rutgers may have finally announced their presence on the national stage with a huge win over Minnesota, 26-19 in a game that may send Minnesota to the Quick Lane Bowel.

UCLA beat Iowa 20-17 in a game no one should have watched unless fans of either team.

Wisconsin, Nebraska, Felon State and Illinois had byes

Agree about the B12 but I think most think they are the third best conference because it appears to be a matter of 'when' Clemson, FSU, Miami and UNC leave the ACC.

Lanning is a fascinating guy to look at cause not only is he only 38 and extremely successful...but he didn't really come from a coaching tree or has allegiance to a major program. Not from SEC or B10 country, Small school player, bounced around year to year and wasn't a FBS position coach until he was 30 and that was at Memphis.

I suppose you could say UGA given his time as DC there, but Kirby is gonna be there another 20 years if he wants.

So Lanning then is at a HUGELY marketed and financially supported program that has big but fair expectations, not Natty or bust.  Gonna take something super special to dislodge him and it won't just be money

It would cost FSU about $64 million to buy out Norvell this year.
FSU gave him a ridiculous contract because they were afraid he was leaving for Bama

A number of reasons.

1. Right now, people follow teams because they are the "State School" so it is a pride in your state issue. I think that only last so long before you have conferences themselves turn into a haves vs have nots, and many of these schools just throw in the towel and collect paychecks, which leads to a lot of people turning off the TV. If you know every year you will be a bottom half of conference team, it makes no sense to invest or watch. More conferences, with regional rivalries had more opportunities for hope.

2. Specific to college sports. With the new settlement allowing $22M to be paid to athletes, that becomes cost prohibitive. Schools are already losing a lot of money on sports, and can't afford $22M more, but also can't afford to disappear into oblivion. So they will start cutting almost all other sports. Longer term they will largely keep the bare minimum to ensure that basketball and football stay. That is bad for sports in general. This will be particularly the case for all schools outside of the top 2 conferences.

The Hippie Satan of Hyperbole

1. College football has always been top heavy. 90% of fan bases kick off the season knowing they have little chance of a championship. That's been the case since I was a kid in the 70s and 80s. But I also think you underestimate the number of people who watch college football for the sake of college football, regardless of their team is playing or not.

2. Yes. In general I agree with you. But football will be fine. And that was the context of the point I was making.

Excellent win yesterday for Yellow Jackets over Hurricanes. Miami first loss of the season . Will this hurt their playoff hopes?
