Hello Scoopers! Porky here after a long hiatus with a serious question. Porky's only child son is a current high school senior who has been accepted to, and is seriously considering Marquette. This past weekend, Porky and family traveled to a rival midwestern Jesuit institution that he's also been accepted to for their admitted student weekend, and were very impressed. They rolled out the red carpet, the President gave a speech to the parents, they had lots of student and faculty sessions and overall it was an extremely comprehensive and well organized event for both parents and students alike.
We also plan on visiting Marquette as soon as possible, but they seem to do things a bit differently. They have several "Find Your Fit Friday" events in Feb and March for admitted students, but as best Porky can tell, the Find Your Fit Fridays don't seem anywhere near as big or eventized, for lack of a better term. They also have two admitted student day events in April so the question Porky is posing to fellow scoopers who's kids have recently gone through the process with MU, is what is the better event to attend?
Porky obviously hopes his son will eventually choose MU, but wants to make sure, given the high cost of travel from the NYC area and what we've already spent traveling to other schools, that we go when MU will be putting its best foot forward with a comparable dog and pony show. At the event we went to this past weekend, there were students and their families from all over the U.S. so it was great for Porky Jr. to interact with them.
The digital and traditional mail communication from MU hasn't been as frequent or informative and short on details to the point where Porky can't help but wonder if there's some geographic discrimination going on here. If Porky and Family lived in greater MKE or Chicagoland for example, would that still be the case? We're definitely going to reach out to admissions to pose the same question on which event makes more sense to attend, but Porky would greatly appreciate Scoopers' candid opinions first. Thanks in advance for your responses.
I think Porky Jr. should be referred to as Piglet.
Your comment about regional discrimination simply does not make any sense to me.
I'm guessing the other Jesuit school is Creighton. I suggest that you inform Piglet that if he chooses them over Marquette, you will fully support his decision and then quickly add that he will be disinherited.
If you want Pork Chop to choose MU, get him to a hoops game at the fiSERV foRUM.
Everything else is gravy.

Admitted students game is 3/8 vs St. John's. Would be a great game to attend. There are still tickets available as my son just got tickets for the game a few days ago.
He is also undecided as to where he will go next year. He's been admitted to MU and UW and is waiting to hear back from a few schools in March. UW gave him a full tuition scholarship and a stipend for books. MU is going to be about 15K/year than UW and even though he would prefer to go to MU the price tag may be a bit too much for him to overlook.
Biggest advice for students choosing between schools is to go to these schools when these events are not happening. That gives you a much better view of the day to day life.
I'd be worried about schools "rolling out the red carpet" trying to impress me like that for a single day.
It's not really that hard to figure out the difference between what you are going to get at UW versus Marquette. At UW you better be able to make your way in a sea of 40,000 other students, but you have almost unlimited opportunities to move into programs of study that you likely never heard of. You will need to be proactively motivated to make the most of those opportunities and not simply float along.
Marquette is going to give you more personal interaction, including with your professors and staff. They are going to work with you and introduce you to opportunities, especially if you seek them out.
Madison gives you all of what a large, flagship institution can provide. Marquette is a more urban environment.
Both will provide you with a fantastic education, but they do so in different ways.

Well said.
The personal touch of MU was exactly what worked for me and I am thankful I chose MU over Purdue.
uw-Madison extension is a great choice if you're a dumb loser.

You do realize than Harvard is the UW-Madison of the East Coast?
Yes. Harvard is where the dumb losers on the East Coast go to school.

Harvard is a funny name for Boston Community College.

Or Xavier.

Whatever! Piglet should understand that choosing a school other than Marquette will result in his being disinherited.
Then again, after the tuition expense of the school Piglet chooses, there probably won't be much money left anyway.

Hey wait a minute. Got my MBA there! Like to think of it as Marquette South!
Piglet will be great wherever he goes. My children went to a school other than Marquette and they're both firmly in the will. They did what was best for them, though I promised both of them I'd find a way to pay for Marquette if they wanted to go to MU.
Incidentally, I understand UW-Madison is the MATC of Dane County!

Had a friend who went to Loyola. I remember going to a Loyola/Marquette game in Chicago with him and Marquette was a solid favorite. We do not need to discuss that game further here. :D
All joking aside, I am glad to hear that Porky will be behind Piglet's decision, whatever it is. Another "Jebbie" school is Georgetown.

I am also interested in the question of geographic bias, so I'll ask:
Did piglet get a Milwaukee Pretzel Company pretzel in the mail from MU?
We are Chicago area, and both my son (last year) and daughter (this year) received a giant pretzel in the mail and it was delicious.
Both of them got maybe two bites.
I mean, I probably paid for the applications, so they were my pretzels, right?
They roll out some BORGs for these events??

Does that mean we assimilate them instead of just hoping they show up?
