"Gold Out" Planned Thursday Night When MU Hosts No. 19/21 Pittsburgh
The Marquette University men's basketball team wraps up its two-game homestand when the squad hosts No. 19/21 Pittsburgh at 8 p.m. CT on Thursday night. ESPN2 will feature MU's ninth national television broadcast of the campaign, with Dave Pasch (play-by-play) and Len Elmore (analyst) calling the action. Fans are encouraged to wear their favorite gold Marquette gear on "Gold Out Night" at the Bradley Center.

Wear gold people. I know these types of things usually fail (i.e. the "baby-blue out" against Pitt on gameday) because a lot of non-student fans just simply don't wear gold to the games. But make the effort and wear a gold t-shirt, sweater or sweatshirt. I know not all the fans will be decked out in gold, but lets try to make it as GOLD as possible in the Bradley Center Thursday night.
Go to the game and cheer as loudly as possible, but wear whatever the heck you want. This whole "GOLD" stuff is nonsense. The Golden Eagles....yuck.
GO WARRIORS!!

I agree 100%! I will not be wearing gold. Why do what they ask when they don't give us what we want....WARRIORS!!!!
We were also Blue and Gold 20 years ago...Don't hate the color, hate the bureaucrats.
Len Elmore loves Pitt and the New York City kids. Pitt only has one NYC kid this year in Travon Woodall so we may not hear about that NYC toughness his boy Levance Fields had.

Haven't the school colors always been blue and gold, through warriors, golden avalanche, hilltoppers, golden eagles?
They gave out the 30 year anniversary baby blues at that game, and it seemed to work well for my tastes. I know the most common article of clothing on marquette's campus was northface, followed by that pitt game shirt.

Do you support the basketball team? If yes, wear gold. It has nothing to do with the name.
I won't be at the Pitt game but I have to admit that I wear a royal blue warriors t-shirt simply because its awesome and I get hi-fives from the old timers.

I guess. When I think of MU, I definitely think gold, or blue and gold, not really just blue. Its better than red though
The noise in the building is what matters. Wear whatever color you want...green, blue, red, black, gold, white.

Yup. White and navy baseball t with the old warriors logo on it. Has nothing to do with making any sort of statement. I just like the shirt.
If you want an effective "color" out, t-shirts should be placed on every seat in the building. Doing less than that is basically begging for minimal participation.
The Texas A&M whiteout against Kansas looks really cool and it is working, for now anyway.
Someone needs to get Len Elmore a gold MU shirt.

No kidding... like, for the sake of a "gold out", something that's meant to display unity and sense of purpose among those in attendance, can't we put aside grudges against the logo or a favorite shirt and paint the BC gold?
I mean, if not, that's fine... but I think it's a fine idea.

I basically ignore and try to pretend the whole Golden Eagle name/mascot doesn't exist b/c it is so unoriginal and b/c like many, I hate the fact we abandoned Warriors. That said, while I will never wear anything of any color with "Golden Eagles" on it, I will certainly be at the game Thursday wearing MU Gold. I don't see why people wouldn't wear gold as a show of unity and support for the team. Funny how a nickname and less so a mascot are supposed to help unify a school community, and our administration bungled this thing so badly it truly is a divisive force among the MU community as a whole.

Plus, I don't think not wearing gold is any sort of statement. If you refused to buy tickets and started a club that watched MU games, but refused to give any money to the school, and then sent pictures of your viewing parties to the administration, that would be a statement.
It will never work at MU, too many old pain in the ass alums who wont wear gold, and people at the games with no real attachment to MU, who are just there for a game. It's what we have now live in the past if you want, life goes on.
I hate the Golden Eagle as much as anyone. I drive around with a Warrior frame on my plates.
I'm wearing gold on Thursday. When other schools do a white out, red out, gold out .. it's AWESOME, and contributes to a bigger home court advantage.
Stop with the rationalization. You can continue the protest of the GE on Friday.
Wear freaking gold just for that one game and help out.
The only gold shirts I have are Fanatics t-shirts from 2002-2006 and they look awful, but I'm still going to wear one of them and so will my Terrapin girlfriend.
I'll wear my Warriors shirt to the Louisville and ND games. It's not that bad of a concession to make, and no one will hold anything against you.
There are several reasons it won't ever work and it's not just alums who despise our nickname.
Another reason is the color. We have a lot of older season ticket holders. When you're 75 years old, you're not going to wear a gold t-shirt to a game. Not many people have gold oxfords or sweaters in their closet. A white out would work much better.
Gold is an awful color and, when you associate it with our pathetic nickname, it's just not ever going to work.

It's not about "Golden Eagles" more than it is about Marquette. Look, I don't refer to Marquette as the Golden Eagles either despite the fact that I went there as a Golden Eagle. It's a nickname...just get over it for ONE night and wear gold to support ONE evening of MARQUETTE basketball. It's not like they're asking everyone to wear green on Earth Day or Christmas to support those two days.
I mean, gold isn't an ugly color when everyone in the arena is wearing the same thing. You'll look like the outcast when you're the only one not wearing gold.
Only a whore would wear gold because Marquette asked for it. They've been asked to change our nickname back for many years. I'll be there and I will not have a stitch of gold on.

Bull. At every game there are hundreds of alums in that age group that wear gold and are happy about it. Whether it's a t-shirt, sweater, vest or dress shirt, they wear the gold with pride because they're happy to represent Marquette and their support for the university isn't contingent on the nickname or anything else.
I have Olive colored skin. If I wear gold I look seasick. It isn't fair! Now no one will think I have spirit. Darn it all.
Warriors fight. Warriors struggle. Warriors prevail. And Warriors are rewarded.
And what is the universal reward, recognized by Warriors around the world?
Gold, of course.
Ipso facto, if you're a true Warrior, you will not hesitate to don GOLD on Thursday.
Wow. I really don't get it. I mean the school colors have been Blue & Gold for ages. Wearing Gold has nothing to do with the Marquette "Gold" or "Golden Eagles" or even "Warriors" for that matter.
It has to do with team unity and spirit. We are all on the same team, and can argue like siblings about the nickname, but let's all pull together when it counts and support our team!
Dang man....wear some gold.
If I could I would be there, wearing gold!

PS - And frankly, since Warriors was out, I thought the best thing to do would be no nickname. Just simply, "We are Marquette." It would have been the only way to garner some unity on the issue.

All you old timers its time to move on. I mean come on, show some support for the TEAM, some of you must live very sad lives if your rational to go to a MU game in blue is to stick it to administration. Have fun being the people that REAL fans hate, your all acting like Brett Favre.....quit trying to stick to to anyone and support your ALMA MATER! That is an excellent point. As an "old timer" I love to see a game on TV where entire rows of people are decked out in the same color and all jumping up and down in unison and yelling their lungs out each and every possession. I think it is awesome and one of the reasons the college basketball experience is so incredible. So, PRN, I am a lemming for wanting the Bradley Center to create that type of atmosphere?

The most backward and self-defeating point to make about this (and there are many) is that groupthink and being a lemming is EXACTLY what makes being the fan of a team and going to games so great. Its why a weak student section or a divided student section severely detracts from a game. Its why the BC is at its best when the students get the alums all riled up and everyone is standing. Heck, its why you wear Marquette gear anywhere or have gear on your car.
To say that you won't do what everyone is doing at a sporting event to not being a lemming is sheer hypocrisy. Its the one area of your life where you are supposed to be a lemming.

I watched a few min of the UCONN-Oklahoma women's game last night and the entire arena was wearing pink. Now you want to bitch about gold being an ugly or lame color, 12K people were decked out in cotton candy pink. Men, women, young and old alike. And as a result, it actually looked pretty cool. So I think that tosses the whole "eww gold is ugly" argument out the window. Besides, I have a feeling if it was a blue or navy "out", people would find a way to moan and groan about being told what to do regardless.

PRN - I have no doubt that you're supporting the team. But you could also support Marquette's effort of a gold-out just as easily. Put a blue button-down over a gold shirt. Wear a hoodie over a gold shirt. Whatever, just remove the blue cover-layer during the game. Perhaps only a few of your good buddies will look down on you then.
Actually, that's probably it, you call everyone lemmings, but you're afraid of what all your buddies would think/say if they saw you wearing gold. They probably normally wouldn't care much, but since you're been so crotchety against it for years, the mockery would be nearly non-stop.
Eh, nobody will change your mind. Oh well.

btw, stop with the "older alum ragging". Our students do Warrior cheers all game long. Our front row of students are dressed as Warriors. The national press calls us Warriors. The Warrior wear is more and more prevalent in the stands year after year--students and alums. Our players refer to themselves as Warriors--even recent grads like Wes. In fact, it is almost a better scenario to have our shadow nickname--considering the history, if you think about it. MU has shown no willingness to stop it.

Unfortunately the only association to the name for students is being brainwashed by the old farts or going with the retro fad. Unless they really loved the team and have some fond memories from when they were three years old. The sportswriters who drop the name every once in awhile know it works better than Viagra for the old dudes. Not much of a victory.
Now the duct tape idea, genius. Would be a great idea for PRN if someone provided the shirt, since the actual purchasing would be forbidden.

The "old timers" will never change, so let them get all upset. The only thing I wish, is that students would stop trying to be cool and calling themselves warriors. I was six years old in 1993. Freshman were two years old. We came to this school as Golden Eagles, and we leave this school as Golden Eagles. "Warriors" who are upset that their name got changed are the highest level of hypocrites, considering that name replaced MU Hilltoppers. Fans under 30, please please let it go. When Im an old timer, I don't want this debate to continue. There is a reason there isn't a "Bring back the Hilltoppers thread!" and that is because the students from the 50s on embraced the Warriors moniker. Lets call it like it is. I appreciate your class and eloquence. Yes, you are right. I was "crapping my pants" and "sucking on my mothers tit" six years ago. I hope you being this angry brings back the Warriors, I really do. All I know, is when your generation's anger is replaced with incontinence and senility, I will wear my Golden Eagle shirt proudly. : )

To be fair, the majority of Warrior fans don't remember how or why the name changed from Hilltoppers. They just know they love "Warrirors".

I could care less. I root for Marquette. Not a mascot. I just don't like self righteous people telling anyone what to do. If it is an organized "Gold Out" to try and build unity, that is one thing, but go off pontificating like you did just makes you seem like a fool - which I am sure you damn while might be. By the way, I graduated in 2001 but have been rooting for Marquette since the 80s.

That is one thing? What else could it possibly be? The administrators looking for support of the Golden Eagles nickname, 17 years later? That IS the thing. Filling a stadium with the home teams colors is a great thing for both players and fans. It is a shame people like yourself refuse based on some propoganda disguised as morals. Dwade, Novak, Diener, Wes, DJ, Jerel, Lazar and Jimmy were all Golden Eagles. Don't call yourself a Warrior to be retro. You (fans under 30) are a Golden Eagle. Live with it.

I'll never forget standing in the median on Wisconsin Avenue with a giant sign that said "Honk if you hate 'Gold'" during rush hour. That got a lot of great responses.
I'm an older alum. Got my gold MU shirt 3 years ago. It doesn't say "Yellow Chickens" on it anywhere. I wear it to all the games I go to and somehow don't feel morally compromised even though I'm a Warrior fan. (Still have a circa 1980 t-shirt in storage.) You should wear gold Thursday NOT because of ESPN or the administration, but so when the team walks out on the court they see a sea of yellow in the stands. It's to inspire those guys on the court. So my unsolicited advice for all you bitter alums out there is swallow hard, put on the gold, and do it for the TEAM we support!
P.S. Love those pants!
I was in grad school at Marquette when Al was here and we won it all. I wear Gold to all the games. If they're calling for a gold-out to support the team, intimate the opponents, help us win, I'm all for it.
GO MARQUETTE!

couldn't agree more!
Here's a thought, for fan participation, in celebration of gold. During the first TV timeout, those in the upper bowl should whip their gregs out or, in the case of a female fan, squat and produce a golden shower to all the crusty, old farts sitting in the 200 level seats.
Man up, ladybug, quit your whining, and wear some gold. We get your point. Now do the right thing.

That sounds like something the West Virginia fans would go for...
The "color" outs are over done and unoriginal... The atmosphere on Sat night against USF was awful and both the lower bowl(season ticket holders) and the students were simply not into the game. I just hope that will change on Thurs night!

I agree with KC. Marquette's colors are Blue and GOLD. I understand the Golden Eagle issues and the Gold fiasco. Would it be different if it were a Blue out? I, too, wear Gold to every game in support of the team and I am from the Warrior era.
I'm a long-time reader, first-time poster, alum, and forever a Warrior. I wear a GOLD Warrior shirt to every game. Was anybody here in New Orleans in 2003 for the final four? I was. The coolest feeling (before we got slaughtered by Kansas) was walking into the pre-game party at the hotel and seeing several thousand MU fans.....ALL WEARING GOLD.
I can hear Len Elmore now: "Marquette wanted to 'gold out' tonight, but look at all the schlubs who didn't bother. 60% of the fans are wearing gold. What a lame effort. This is just another reason why I like Pitt and bash Marquette all the time."

That's hitting 'em where it hurts!
They'll be forced to listen now!
Marquette Guard Dwight Buycks just called me to tell me to wear gold for tomorrow nights game. Gonna have to listen to Dwight. If Buzz would have called me I would be wearing a "Gold Man" spandex thing... that or those sweet sweet gold argyle golf pants.
On a side note I used to wear a powder blue argyle sweater vest to the games. That all changed when that Sweater vest lost to DePaul. Since then I switched to Gold and We've been undefeated. Not that i'm superstitious or anything...
Dwight just called me, too. I wish I could find those sweet argyle pants to go with my gold shirt.

The teal is probably the most likely to not be misunderstood. I will continue to use it.
I refuse to use those damn smiley faces, and therefore, will continue to use teal (or the /sarcasm suggested by others).
I'm sticking it the man by not using emoticons. Boom.
Teal is an awful color and it's too close too blue, which is half of Marquette's colors, the other being Gold when you use teal you associate it with our pathetic nickname. thats why no one should wear gold to tonights game!

student section looks awesome. Almost full gold (at least it looks that way from my couch.)
Agreed, students brought it tonight, loud and proud!
WE ARE MARQUETTE!
I'm at the game right now. There are stretches of rows in the half-court sections where not a gold shirt can be found. Absolutely pathetic that almost every other school that does this can get it done, and we can't even pretend
Students were there in gold ready to go.
Alumni *cough lower bowl cough* sucked.
Yep, cosign. The season ticket holder gold-out was a complete bust. Way to stick it to the man.
Why is this even important?
The fact that 60% of the crowd was in gold vs 70% affected the game how?

If the team only played at 60% of their potential you would bitch about them. I think it's fair for gold wearing fans to complain about the 40% of non-gold wearing fans. If we can't even get together something as simple as "everyone wear gold", it surprising we expect so much out of the team and coach.
It's not rocket science, wear F'in gold and make noise for the team! That's all. Put up or shut up.
Hmm...let's see. MU planned a gold out. Players wear gold. Students did their part and wore gold. Apparently the crotchety ol' alums ('06 grad myself) just didn't get the memo or didn't want to participate. It was pretty damn visible on TV. It probably didn't affect the game in any tangible way, but still, if I was a player and I knew there was going to be a gold out, and when I walked out into the BC and saw that most of the alums didn't give a care to participate in it I might have felt a little disheartened.
Of course, I still would have busted my ass and tried, but it doesn't hurt to be a team player and try to support the school we all went to. If anything, it was for the players, not for the administration or whatever BS reasons have been spewn by the too-cool-for-school older alums who think wearing gold is a travesty.
It probably wouldn't have affected the game, but it sure would have been nice to see the crowd, other than the students who did bring it, support the team. Especially on a game that was on ESPN.
/And before you say you support the team, you knew it was a Gold Out before hand.
Nude out would have affected the game.
That would have been pasty hairy out. No one wants that.
